'No Jackets requirec By JAMIE FULLER Staff Writer Sarge Frye Field was the site of a ninth inning rally that pushed the 21st-ranked Gamecocks over the top against the lOth-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Tuesday night This thriller pitted Yellow Jacket pre-season All American pitcher Mike Hostetler (6-5) against USC's Jared Baker (6-2). The first scores of the game came in the third and fourth innings as USC took a 2-1 lead. Mac White, center fielder for the Gamecocks, scored in the third inning off a dod fly bv first baseman Jeff Parnell. In the top of the fourth, Georgia Tech's center fielder, Anthony Byrd, landed on third base after the Gamecock's only error of the night. Second baseman Carlton Fleming, looking for a homer, hit the ball deep into the outfield. Two strikes later and USC was up to bat. In what seemed like a replay of the top of the inning, Gamecock shortstop Randy Thompson reached second base on an error by the Yellow Jackets; one of five miscues on the night. A double by White brought him home for USC's second run. However, the fourth inning marked the second time USC left three runners on base, with a total of 15 runners left on base for the night Things were quiet until Georgia Tech's first baseman, Doug Kenney, opened the eigth inning with a solo home run to rightfield. Then the Yellow Jackets struck again as Byrd scored off Andy Brace's fly ball to left field. Georgia Tech was in scoring position again with runners at. second and third, but left fielder Michael Wolff hit a line drive to Gamecock shortstop Burke Cromer to end the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Gamecocks left designated hitter Rob DeBoer on third base after pitcher Mike Hostetler (cousin of New York i Giants' quarterback and Super Bowl MVP - Jeff Hostetler) struck out catcher Dave Willman. Redemption came for Baker in the ninth inning when he struck out the ( first batter he faced, oufielder Brian Alyea. The next play was a double s by Georgia Tech's catcher, Jason Varitek, to left field. From here, Ken- r ney was back up at bat, but this time, a grounder to first base for the second out stole his thunder. Baker struck out Reynolds for out number t three. The Gamecocks had the bottom of the ninth to finally get that elusive s big hit, and that is just what happened. t Down by one run, Parnell led off the batting order with a strikeout. Next was Burke Cromer who blasted a base hit to right field. Hostetler I walked left fielder Jerry Shepherd to leave runners at first and second r base. At bat was right fielder D.T. Cromer, and after one strike and a passed ball, the runners advanced to second and third base, respectively. D.T. t Cromer was intentionally walked, and Thompson moved to the plate.
