F ootball NFL continues in misguided effort to set moral standards for nation The National Football League, consistently the most popular professional sports organization for more than 20 years, has once again stuck its nose where it didn't belong. Earler this week at the annual NFL meeting in Hawaii, Commissioner Paul Tagliabue reiterated his position that the 1993 Super Bowl scheduled for Phoenix would be moved elsewhere. Phoenix is now taboo because the Martin Luther King Holiday was not passed in Arizona. When a San Diego civil rights group asked him not to move the game there because of San Diego's alleged racism, Tagliabue had the gall to say the NFL would "stay out of politics." Tagliabue plunged the NFL into politics in the first place when he decided to move a football game because of a political act by the citizens of Arizona. A professional snort should not be allowed to dictate how a body of voters should think. Every city in the country has racism and other nasty social ills. If the pplicy towards Phoenix was applied to football as a whole, there would never be another football game played in the United States of America. In a less serious but still obnoxious move, Jim Finks, chairman of the NFL competition committee, announced the league would ban all celebrations by players anywhere on the field. The new rules go so far as to ban opposing coaches and players from shaking hands with one another after a game, so as to avoid fights. With this weird stand, the NFL is essentially banning good sportmanship after games. Opposing teams should stalk off the field and not talk to one another. The ban on end zone and even sideline celebrations after a score takes away from the enjoyment of the game. v No doubt NFL is big business, but it is still a game. Pro football, for all its subtlety, is not rocket science. It is also not a branch chapter of the ACLU. The NFL should quit legislating moralitv and ethics.
