From Staff Reports Most students are choosing to go further than Myrtle Beach for Spring Break, but the city's laws concerning such Spring Break pastimes as drinking and sleeping on the beach are similar to Florida hots passengers. This provision shall not apply to an employee engaged in the necessary discharge of duty, or to persons riding within truck bodies in space intended for merchandise. (Code 1966, Sec. 19-10) Sec. 9-1-34. Automobiles ? Sleeping in It shall be unlawful for any person to sleep in any automobile or other motor vehicle in the city between the hours of 9 p.m. and sunrise. (Code 1966, Sec. 21-6) Everyone's doing it! However, many students are planning to flock to Myrtle Beach during Easter weekend, when these laws are sure to be strictly enforced. So, to make sure your Spring Break or Easter vacation is spent on the beach and not in a jail cell, check out the following excerpt from the city of Myrtle Beach's Code of Laws. Sec. 7-2-3. Drinking Prohibited in Specified Places It shall be unlawful for any person within the city to: Publicly engage in the drinking of alcoholic liquors, beer, ale, porter, wine or any other similar malt or fermented beverage. Engage in the drinking of alcoholic liquors, beer, ale, porter, wine or any other similar malt or fermented beverage upon any premises upon which an athletic contest is being conducted. Drink alcoholic liquors, beer, ale, porter, wine or any other similar malt or fermented beverage on the premises of any retail, wholesale or manufacturing alcoholic liquor business or business establishment. (Code 1966, Sec. 6-4) Sec. 7-10-4. Sleeping on Public Beach after 9:00 p.m. Prohibited It shall be unlawful for any person to sleep on the public beach within the city between the hours of 9 p.m. and sunrise. (Code 1966, Sec. 6-4) Sec. 8-1-13. Carrying of Certain Weapons Prohibited It shall be unlawful for any person in the city to carry, either concealed or not, any pistol, dirk, slingshot, metal knuckles, razors or other deadly weapons used for the infliction of injury to person or property. Breach of the Peace; Disorderly Conduct; Drunkeness in Public It shall be unlawful for any person to commit any breach of the peace, conduct himself in a disorderly manner, be publicly drunk or under the influence of intoxicating beverages, be loud and boisterous or conduct himself in such a manner as to disturb the peace and quiet of the public. (Code 1966, Sec. 21-9) Sec. 9-1-33. Trespass No person shall enter upon the lands or premises owned or in possession of another after notice from the owner or person in possession prohibiting an entry. Travelers beware Break at beach can be 'cheezv' By DAVID BOWDEN Viewpoint Editor Spring Break means living it up, and Myrtle Beach is the best place in South Carolina to do just that. I live in Conway (Jewel of the South), fifteen or so miles from the Grand Strand. Hopefully, this qualifies me to write this article, which is meant to provide a guide for those who are planning to spend Spring Break in M.B. Directions are easy. To get to Myrtle Beach, go through Conway, take Highway 501 past Coastal Carolina College (home of S.C.'s best basketball team, the Fighting Chanticleers) and follow the traffic jam. , Myrtle Beach is world famous as a beach resort. An old Playboy article said it was one of the Top 10 Places to Meet Women in the nation. Myrtle Beach is even the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question (I think the question was "Where is the best place to get fluorescent Party Naked t-shirts?") However, Myrtle Beach cops are not friendly, and North Myrtle Beach cops are Nazis. I speak from personal experience. Those that speed in North Myrtle are asking for trouble; God help you if you drive drunk (that is not from personal experience). It is easier to use fake IDs in Myrtle Beach than Columbia, if you shop around. The Beer Blast (Bud Fest, whatever they are calling it these days) stinks. It is a tourist trap. Unless you want to see thousands of drunks beating each other ud or wallowing in their own sick. I would not advise the Blast. There are plenty of decent parties and clubs to go get drunk at besides that. The best bars and nightclubs are up in northern Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach proper. For those so inclined, Mother Fletcher's and Xanudu have wet t-shirt contests every week, or so I have been told. The strip joints are on Highway 501 going into downtown Myrtle Beach. My personal favorite beach access is at 28th Avenue South. It is near Myrtle Beach State Park and Myrtle Cinema 10. There is also a jet-ski rental nearby. All in all, 28th is less touristy than other beach areas can be. The northern and southern tips of the Grand Strand (Cherry Grove and 1 Surfside respectively) also have less crowded beaches. During Spring Break, these two locales will be fairly exciting so check it out. There are alsowater slides, bumper boats and go-cart racing courses for the true athlete. Finally, there is the heart of Myrtle Beadh, the Pavilion. If your idea of fun is waiting in traffic and hitting on drunken members of the opposite sex, this is the place for you. The Pavilion should be intolerably obnoxious around Spring Break, so be forewarned. Here is a list of things to avoid at the Pavilion and environs: the Ripley's Believe or Not Museum, any Coke machine (75 cents a pop), and for the love of God, do not ever go to Can-Am Gift Stores. They will harass you into buying a crappy Led Zeppelin t-shirt or poster, I guarantee. This should give the reader some idea of what to expect at the beach. If you want classy atmosphere, go to Hilton Head; if you want to kill a few brain cells, go to Myrtle Beach. So, Gamecock ads are a waste? Then why are you reading one?
