Tracy: In '76, Swedish director Ingmar Bergman gave us the compelling Scenes from a Marriage, a heavyweight chronicling of a couple's crumbling marriage, and now in '91, Scenes from a Mall by Mazursky takes a comedic look at the subject of modern marriage. Allen and Midler are two extreme personalities in our popular culture. It is difficult for the viewer to reduce these giant people to a simple yuppie couple living the good life in sunny Southern California. The fine acting by Allen and Midler add substance to their characters and make the story believable. In Mazursky's film, the mall is a microcosm of American life. One can live out dreams, the American dream in particular, at the mall. I loved the juxtaposing of the fantasy of the mall atmosphere with the real problems and complexities of modern life. Despite Mazursky's rambling directorial style, I recommend the movie. It is a decent story with fine acting and offers a break from the typical Hollywood action movie that might contain two pages of dialogue. Doug: Good acting and a wellwritten script did not convince me that this film will compete with other films requiring less thought and more action. With this being the case, I normally don't go to see movies that show what real life is like. Instead, I prefer to see fantasy and action that lack the intellectual climate of this film. Intellectual entertainment is not what I go to see movies for; rather, it is the mindless, melodramatic emotionalism that exists in most Hollywood movies. But to the movies credit, the portrayal of Americana in the 1990s can appear bland. If Mazursky wanted to wake America up, this movie is quite successful. As far as entertainment, it was disappointing. It is a good art film, lacking the emotional appeal of what the viewing public pays money to see. sn A BEACH| rper Person Plus Tax DOM >ril b, lyyi.
