fSSf Freshman Jamie Watson scorec Monday's 60-41 victory over the E ter in USC's Saturday's game aga Gamecocl U MIUIUUI By SCOTT GANN Staff Writer For the Gamecocks, Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20th, turned out to be a beautiful baseball day, in more ways then one. On a day which was blessed with warm, spring-like weather, USC took full advantage of their opportunities. In what could almost be described as a perfect game, the Gamecocks defeated the Winthrop Eagles, 7-0. The combination of superb pitching, sharp defense and a late innings energy burst at the plate, assured the team a victory. The first five-and-a-half innings of the game featured a pitching duel between Eric Wroldsen of Winthrop, giving up two hits and four strikeouts, and Jared Baker of USC who yielded just one hit with seven strikeouts. Third baseman Burke Cromer -jg was next, and after a first pitch that Cromer said hit off his knee, but was ruled as a foul tip strike, he followed with a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line, to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Jerry Shepherd came to the plate, and he proceeded to run up a full count by fighting off three straight tough pitches. Then the Gamecocks executed a perfect hit-and-run which pulled the shortstop out of position, allowing the hit to pass Scot through.
