With the help of an astounding 37 free throw attempts and with the poise and power of Clarence Weatherspoon (a.k.a 'Spoon), the Golden Eagles slipped by a Gamecock team that virtually led the game in rebounds, field goal percentage, assists, and of course, fouls. The Gamecocks committed 24 naughties, compared to the Eagles' yM nine, giving Southern Miss 37 |PI opportunities to connect on the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles capitalized and pumped in 26 points on only free throws. Both Gamecock big men, Jeff Roulston and Chris Leso, fouled out cock on a day that saw Weatherspoon hit 5 all of his seven free throw attempts, lead both teams in scoring with 20 points and can a three-pointer near ^ the end of the game that allowed the , Eagles to keep a hold of its slim lead for the eventual victory. The Gamecocks, despite shooting !eir 43 percent from the field and 1F12 committing fouls upon fouls, were rge still competitive until the final and seconds of the game when the Golden "ies Eagles hit their final six of seven free throw attempts to secure the victory. ve? Although holding the Southern Mississippi explosive offensive firepower in check, USC could never get past its foul problems, or even more than that, put the ball in the hoop during their fast break opportunities and layup shots. For the first time in 16 games, the Gamecocks, who were leading 2524 at the half on a Barry Manning basket with two seconds remaining, lost a game in which they were leading after 20 minutes of action. For the second time this season, the Golden Eagles again escaped the hands of USC in an almost identical fashion as they did on Jan. 10, when they beat the Gamecocks 64-58 at Carolina Coliseum. In the first meeting, again complete with low shooting percentages by both teams, Weatherspoon surged late in the . second half to help the Eagles i t ton -i_ _ _ overpower uiv. in uie win. The Gamecocks, now 18-8 and 5-6 in the Metro, desperately need to t overcome their flaws within their remaining Metro Conference games in order to show they are worthy of an invitation to the NCAA party in March. Ninth-ranked Southern Miss, with the victory, improved to 19-3 and 10-1 in the M tro, and have already clinched at least a tie for the conference title.
