Oh My! All this and more will be here this weekend as the Greatest Show on Earth rolls into Carolina Coliseum Feb. 8-10 for six performances. Prancing horses, flying trapeze artists and colorful clowns will be a part of Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Railev Cirrus' 190th anniversary celebration. This year's performance is the first without the long-time star of the show, Gunther GableWilliams. However, public relations officer Steve Yaras said the? circus is still the greatest show on earth. "In fact," he says, "it is just as good, if not better, without Gunther." In their American debut, Italy's Family Togni presents exotic animal acts under the guidance of new circus sensation Flavio Togni. The family will perform with Liberty horses, elephants, the Great White Rhinoceros and black panthers. Yaras is quick to praise Flavio Togni. I By BRIAN SHELTON Staff Writer On this great planet called Earth, there are two constants: the atmosphere and Robert DeNiro. Without DeNiro, at least 17 movies a year would be without a star. The "Best Actor" Oscar would have to be thrown out, replaced with "Best performance by a non-Robert DeNiro actor." The planet would simply tilt on its axis and. . .well, he's not that important, but he is a good actor. On the subject of actors, has anyone noticed Robin Williams is getting tamer with each role he plays? As opposed to his earlier roles, in which the spastic nature of his stand-up was accented, his most recent works have portrayed him in such serious roles as an in spirational teacher in Dead Poet's Society and a timid doctor in Awakenings. He's starting to remind me of my eighth-grade English teacher who was so dull, he often blended into the wallpaper. It is the work of these two actors that makes Awakenings something special. Without them, this film would be mere "TV movie of the week fodder," but DeNiro and Williams carve out believable characters that raise Awakenings above this fate. Williams plays Dr. Malcom Sayer, a recluse whose experience lies in studying inanimate objects. When he applies for a job at Bainbridge Hospital, he is unaware that it deals with actual patients. Later on, he comes to find out that most of them are as inanimate as the subjects he studied before. Some of the patients suffer from a neurological disorder that makes them catatonic. Their eyes are open and some of them can walk. In general, most of them sleep for long periods of time, some for 40 or more years. The first recipient is Leonard Lowe (DeNiro), and after a large dose, he is resurrected from a 25-year sleep. The others also receive the medicine and collectively want one thing: to make up for lost time. The plot is fascinating and hones in on the importance of living your life to the fullest. The underlying theme is that one doesn't realize the great gift of life until it is taken away. The actors, more than the story itself, make this film work. Williams excellently portrays Sayer, a wonderfully written character who, despite his insistence to the contrary, really does care for people. In a subplot, we also get to see the "awakening" of Sayer himself, who finally begins to embrace life after his experience with his patients. Not many actors could convey the innocence and naivete that Lowe has when he awakens, and even fewer could make the transition from child-man to eventual independence (when Lowe decides to demand his rights as an adult). Lowe is the main focus of the film and also the first to begin showing the side effects of the medicine (ticks, shaking and paranoia). DeNiro never misses a beat and is believable all the way through. The supporting cast is also excellent, from the other patients (played humorously and poignantly) to the love interests of Sayer and Lowe, Eleanor (Julie Kavner) and Paula (Penelope Ann Miller). The only problems with the film come in the lengthy exposition before the "awakenings" (it takes about an hour before Lowe is given the medicine) and the sometimes shoddy editing. Some scenes seemed tacked on and after a while, it becomes tiresome to hear yet another character expound on the "joys of life." Overall, Awakenings kept me awake and generally pleased. Applause goes to Penny Marshall who succeeds again after her first hit, Big.
