War-wracked relations endure Storm stirs ei By KATHY HEBERGER Carolina Life Editor While servicemen work amid the gales of Desert Storm, students with relatives in the gulf are writing supportive letters and praying for the soldiers' safety. "I don't know exactly where they are right now, but I'm still hopeful they're safe," biology sophomore Catherine Binuya said. "They're in the ground forces, and I hope they won't face any fighting." Binuya began writing to servicemen at Christmastime and has received letters back from them. Her last letter was dated Jan. 1. "Most were really upbeat, confident. But they knew what was going on and were ready for it," she said. Photojournalism senior Lori Cook's husband, Lt. Roy Outcelt, is also among the ground forces in Saudi Arabia. She is expecting to deliver their first baby in May. "I really hope he's home for that," she said. "Before he left, he made me promise not to worry. He's somewhere over there with the ground troops, and I'm trying not to brood over trouble that's not there right now," Cook said. Marketing junior Ed Scheer's best friend has been in Saudi Arabia since the summer. "I didn't think about it too much during the summer. He'd been to Panama and Hondurous before and come out of it alright," he said. "Now I'm worried and nervous." It means the world to them," Binuya said. Cook, who has talked with her husband extensively about how it feels to be amid a conflict with other troops, agreed the troops need the public's support. "They need it for survival. Their lives are at risk if they don't feel that America is behind them," she said. Scheer said he feels strongly this war should not be happening but advises, "your feelings against the war should not have anything to do with the soldiers and your support for them."
