Charlotte tor By DAVID CARAVIELLO & STE1 Staff Writers The USC men's basketball team, fresh off an impressive 2-1 showing in the Great Alaska Shootout, will travel to Charlotte, N.C., this weekend to face the Atlantic Coast Conference's version of the Brat Pack in the first round of the Diet Pepsi Tournament of Champions. Waiting to face the Gamecocks at 9 p.m. Friday is host team North Carolina and Dean Smith's band of freshman phenoms, who have trounced the likes of San Diego State and Jacksonville to open the season. The matchup will renew a storied rivalry that has been put on hold for 18 years. Arguably, USC's biggest win came against the Tar Heels, a 52-51 victory in 1971 that clinched the ACC championship. North Carolina won the last meeting, a 1972 first-round NCAA tournament game in Morgantown, W.V., 92-69 and holds a commanding 54-20 lead in the overall series. The current Tar Heel squad is ranked fourth in the nation, primarily because of its stockpile of young talent. Smith has corraled what might be his best recruiting class ever to complement a steady returning class. Seven-foot center Eric Montross (20.5 points per game in high school) heads the list of Tar Heel W ' ivy? Student Travel Catalog! CALL for your FREE copy! Then there's forwards Pat Sullivan (26.5), Brian Reese (24.5) and Clifford Rozier (34.5) and guard Derrick Phelps (14.5). Forward George Lynch (8.6 points, 5.4 rebounds per game in 1989-90) returns along with star ters Pete Chilcutt (9.0, 6.6) at center, Rick Fox (16.2, 4.6) at forward and King Rice (9.2, 2.0) at point guard. Hubert Davis (9.6, 1.8) will probably start at the other guard position. The freshmen give Smith offencutt, a true power forward forced to play center last season, can return to his natural position with Montross in the lineup. All of the forwards can score, and Fox and Lynch can play a strong rebounding two-guard when needed. The size could give USC considerable trouble up front. Aside from the 7-foot Montross, Chilcutt is 6-feet-10-inches, Rozier is 6-feet 9-inches, and on the bench Smith has 6-foot-11-inch Kevin Salvadori and 7-foot Matt Wenstrom. If the Gamecocks make it past UNC, their most likely opponent in Saturday's tournament championship will be the University of Houston Cougars who take on the Iowa State Cyclones in the opening game of the tourney on Friday night at 7 p.m. Ranked 17th nationally in many preseason polls, the Cougars frontline assault is _ M.j i r r o ~ ? l guiueu oy o-iooi-o-incn senior ruiward Craig Upchurch and 6-foot-10-inch senior center Steve Stevenson.
