Gamecock c ignites retur By RICH TAYLOR Staff Writer The USC defense, under fire for their lackluster play during the Gamecocks' three game losing streak, looked to turn things around Saturday against Southern Illinois. But after Saluki quarterback Fred Gibson caught a nine-yard pass from tailback Greg Brown with 10:43 remaining in the fourth quarter, SIU was down only 24-13 to the heavily favored Gamecocks. More than ever, USC needed a big play by the defense. Fortunately for the Gamecocks, cornerback Cedric Surratt delivered. First, Surratt broke through to block the extra point following Brown's touchdown pass. Then, after a Gamecock punt gave SIU a chance to pull even closer, Surratt turned in the play of the game. He intercepted a Gibson pass on the USC 29-yard line, eluded several Saluki tacklers and was stopped just short of the goal line On the next play, Albert Haynes dove in from the one, giving the 'Cocks a 31-13 lead. "The coaches wanted us to put more pressure on the quarterback and play more man coverage," Surratt said. "They had confidence in us (defensive backs) and we had confidence in the line to put pressure on and try to make the quarterback make bad decisions. "We blitzed a lot more. Blitzing really gives the defensive backs more leverage, and we're able to see things better. We did play a lot of zone, but we played more man in this game than we have all year."
