Robert Plant belts out new and olc Rock leg Concert Review By DENNIS SHEALY Staff Writer tirtrvn n ima f K fr\n rrV\ fka untc upju a unto uuLfugu uiw thick mists above Stonehenge, a mystical shadow rose and covered the world. This shadow was to become known as one of the greatest bands ever, the mighty Led Zeppelin. But alas, time took its toll, and the band passed into a legend that has lasted to today. The nice thing about legends is they allow the good, wonderful and mystical to be remembered, and it's only when the legend is tampered with that it becomes bland and uninteresting. This is basically what the Robert Plant show Thursday night at Carolina Coliseum did for the Led Zeppelin legend. For the most part, it was a fine show. The band was tight and rather competent as musicians. Plant hasn't lost too much of l}is How* n /A LJJLL CL \U Wen Join us for lunch or din improvement. There was an extravagant light show and back-drop videos to keep the audience entertained. But for ine mosi pari, uic snuw was vciy uninteresting. Plant was dressed like a heavy metal M. C. Hammer, and she pranced around the stage like a Druid fairy doing a sun god dance or something silly like that. I think he's trying to imitate David Coverdale. His voice still had much of its original power, but his range and vocal prowess has diminished over the years. The biggest problem I had with the show was I believed Plant should have more class. His work with the Honey Drippers and his first three solo albums showed his talents as a singer and a song-writer and proved that he truly was moving away from the past. Then he had to form a psuedo-metal band and start acting like Mick Jagger by trying to prove he could still rock after all these years. I respected him for that. Plant I couldn't respect The most annoying member of Plant's band had to be the guitarist. He insisted on imitating the young Jimmy Page ? deep back bends and all. The only thing he needed to make his act complete was one of Page's old black silk kimonoes with the dragons on it He is a good musician, but his speed lick style raped the guitar works of both Page and Robbie Blunt. The high points of the show were definitely the old Zeppelin tunes "Going to California," "Living Loving Maid" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" as well as many of Plant's earlier solo songs. It was a good show for what it was, but Plant could do better. The Black Crows opened for Plant and put on a great show. They might not be covering any new musical territory, but no-frills rock'n'roll will always get a crowd going. vprove entree? 3 OFF. larked^ * ^IPS^ Ffr : ;#& J#/V .?tifeg?P #?> J-afe^^ps r'fA. ? jg*> Kjbj.'$ If L'"T'lVi" li'i ; .......
