Queen c?,,? in promoting and representing the university should be expanded. Most of the public appearances and speaking engagements she made were results of her personal efforts. "Gdine into the interview, I was asked what I would do to uplift the reputation of the university, and I really dug down and answered those questions about some of the programs I would implement and some of the causes I would get involved with," Shannon said. "But after I was crowned Homecoming queen, I found out later that it was pretty much just a oneday event. So I had to motivate mvself fo dn fhincr? in th& rv>_ J " 111 winmunity and on campus to represent the university. "When you're crowned Homecoming queen, you're ready to take on the world. You're ready to do something and get involved. And it was kind of disappointing to be confronted with the statement, 'Your day is over,' when I thought I had just begun," she said. Shannon said some people were surprised USC had selected a black . woman to be its Homecoming queen. "The person shouldn't be looked at as far as race, color or creed. The person should be looked at for themselves, and what's on the inside," she said. "I think that's a problem. So many people get so worked about what color the cani t . She also thinks more student involvement is needed in the selection of the Homecoming , candidates. "The people who judge candidates should be closely related to the university, so they will know what's going on, not just someone out in the community that might not know the main issues and concerns of the university. It should be a diversified panel of judges," she said. Sandi's mother said many people warned Sandi about USC, and told her how difficult it was going to be accomplish her goals, but she said Sandi did not let that discourage her. "When she first went to USC a lot of people told her that her that she would just be a number," Jessie Shannon said. "But when she went there, she was really determined to make herself known and to set goals that she wanted to reach, and she accomplished a whole lot while she was there. I think she has really been strengthened with the knowledge that she gained through college as well as through the relationships she made ? r J - r 1 1 Wlin menus, laeuny anu classmates."
