Football se baseball pi The hot weather of summer is turning into the cool, brisk atmosphere of autumn and halloween is approaching. Football season is in full swmg and basketballs are bouncing. The boys of summer have been going at it for months. This time of the year is a sports lover's dream. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, one of those sports is winding down. After a regular season schedule of 162 games, the Major League Baseball Playoffs are finally upon us. Granted there is one game left to be played before the regular season is officially over, but for all practical purposes, especially for the 22 non-playoff teams, the 1990 regular season is over. Congratulations go out to the Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinalti Reds for winning their divisions. The Boston Red Sox celebration has been put on hold due to something called a pennant race. The American League East Division is the only one to go wire to wire as the Toronto Blue Jays and the Red Sox have fought tooth and nail for the title. The A's wrapped things up some time in April and never looked back. Oakland is presently nine games up on the Chicago White Sox and have the best record in baseball, small wonder for a team with such studs as Canseco, McGwire, Henderson and McGee. Besides an all-star lineup of offensive fire power, the A's can boast of the best pitching in the league, their 3.14 earned run average leads all Major League teams, and a defense that isn't too shabby. With an in-field of Terry Steinbach at catcher, Mark McGwire at first, Willie Randolph at second, Todd Weiss at short and Carney Lansford at third, the A's can claim to be as strong defensively as any team in the league. Offensively, there's no comparison. While most teams only dream of having the regular season batting champion on their team, the A's might have two this season. Rickey Henderson was second in the American League in hiiyng with a .326 average as of Sunday and Willie McGee, who came over to the A's in a trade from the National League's St. Louis Cardinals, was leading the National League with a .335 average. In case anyone is wondering, yes, McGee can still win the National League Batting title even A Man's i What A Mai All young men have one res have to register with Selective 18th birthday. It's quick. If you can drive in the people who get on base, you should win a few games. The A's do that very well. Besides consistently getting on base, Henderson hits a few out of the park, 28 HR's this season, and the battery of Jose Canseco and McGwire contribute with 76 HR's between them. All of this offensive fire power and the names of Harold Baines and Dave Henderson haven't even been mentioned. Mix in a few decent pitchers like Dave Stewart, Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersley, and you have what amounts to another World Series Championship team. However, I'm not one to put the wagon before the horse. There will be three other teams who hope to have something to say about another A's title. I The Reds started the season like < gangbusters and indeed looked like a team ready to challenge the A s. Cincinnati won 33 of their first 45 games and were sitting pretty on top of the National League West division. However, the Reds have strueeled into a S7-5R rernrH cinrp. and backed into the title Saturday after the L.A. Dodgers eliminated themselves with a loss to San Francisco. The Reds are loaded with talent and have some good pitchers. Despite being the first National League team to lead their division the entire season (a testimony more to the weakness of the N.L. West than to the strength of the Reds), they definitely lack the momentum to carry them through the playoffs. I pick the Pirates to represent the National League in the World Series because unlike the Reds, the Pirates have what is referred to in _ the sports world as "Uncle Mo" on their side. The Pirates are a team that went from being a pretender to a contender in a very short period of time.
