Representatives from companies like Belk, Parisian, Rackes, T&R Associates and 10 others headquartered primarily throughout the Southeast will advise the retailing department on curriculum, fundraising, workshops and conferences. They will also expand internship opportunities for retailing students, giving them "precious contact with some key companies in retailing," said Sallie Hook, committee chairperson of the department of retailing. The internships will also be open for faculty. Retail faculty members will eventually be required to work in management retail positions for college credit for a semester to refamiliarize and update themselves with current retail techniques. Everything will be done through the sub-committees of curriculum, fundraising, workshop/conference and faculty/student internship, Hook said. "Faculty members from the retailing department will get together with members of the board to go over the written curriculum, for ium each ition led if you have or ny of the following Ingles >es ier STD's) 2719 Middleburg Dr. Suite 105 Columbia, SC 29204 (603) 254-6537 \ Ifeftyx Sjw-* miMSM hh ... ^ ?llege ring NOW PEXS COLLEGE RING L?Jl** 10 Time; 9;00 to 4:00 rsity Bookstore -Russell House 3ur complete ring selection on display in your college bookstore. 90-233A(CI,-aS1-g1A) PROGRAM UNION Arts Committee 'resents ti Holmes go Dance leatre e Nominee for f-AOA \ :?| \rtist of the Year y" 8,1990 8:00 p.m. er for the Arts A i4.00 Public $8.00 rchased at the Coliseum Box itions or by calling 777-SCAT. ation call 777-7130 11 House Room 209. i part, by Student Activity Fees. iIMP INA PROGRAM UNION retailing de] "iculum, opp example," she said. "The retailers ' will tell us what it is their employ- j ees need to know so we can alter i the curriculum to teach exactly i that." This places the department "in < tune with the retailers to provide < even better quality students as gra- 1 duates and potential employees," < Hook said. A similar process will i be followed in generating ideas on 1 the other committees. Other functions of the board will be providing guidance and support i for faculty research and service efforts, assisting the department in efforts to increse industry involvement and support, providing guidance and support in the recruitment and placement of outstanding retail majors and assisting, in the development of long-range plans for the department. Not only is the retailing department excited about this progressive board, but the companies will benefit as well, said Tom Amerman, chairman of the board and senior vice president of personnel and loss prevention at Parisian. "Every year we are in need of 100 to 125 newly trained retail graduates. Hopefully, this will help us to recruit many from USC. The history of students hired from the institution is an excellent one, and it is wise to go with history," Amerman said. Barbara Rackes, chief executive officer of Rackes, believes "the quality of staffing in retailing has been reduced. The work force capable of producing sales is getting older. The younger bracket of the force needs more training before being hired." "My participation is one way I can make a contribution to the student, with the ultimate result being a better-trained, more articulate retail graduate," she said. Rackes also believes "involvement with some other southeastern _ M ? f!.' 1 retailers, is oenenciai. Careful selection was made by the retailing department, and "the people we are working with seem very supportive and eager to help," Hook said. The integration of the Advisory Board should help the department continue their growth and success and aid in making the department "the foremost in the country," Rackes said. One retail graduate student will be working closely with the committees, and comments are encouraged from retail students. The Advisory Board will elect officers and assign responsibilities See RETAILING page 3 KETO I THAT THE D CONTENT VSPAPER IS ISIBLE BY TUTION OF :D STATES. riTUTION we live by ivritc: Constitution.
