Tech's defense proves too tough for USC By RICH TAYLOR Staff Writer The USC football team marched into Atlanta's Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday afternoon, owners of a 3-0 record and Top 25 national ranking. Five turnovers, five sacks and eight dropped passes later, the Gamecocks were 27-6 losers to Georgia Tech before a sell-out crowd of 46,011. Tech extended the number of quarters they have not allowed opposing offenses to reach the end zone to 12 and increased its overall record to 3-0. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Gamecock offense in check, allowing only two Collin Mackie field goals of 29 yards and 47 yards. "Georgia Tech played a great game," USC head coach Sparky Woods said. "They dominated the game in every phase. They have a fine defense, (and) a big, strong physical team. Tech out-toughed us and outexecuted us." After a scoreless first quarter in which Gamecock quarterback Bobby Fuller was intercepted twice, Tech drove 88 yards in 17 plays to take a 7-0 lead with 4:34 remaining in the first half. On fourth-and-goal from the one yard line, Yellow Jacket quarterback Shawn Jones scored untouched around right end. The drive consumed 7:58 and nroved tn he a confidence builder for the Tech team. "I think the long drive was the key to the first half," Tech flanker Bobby Rodriguez said. "It proved that we could move the ball on them." Jones added, "I think it took a lot out of them. I think their defense got tired. The length of the drive enabled our defense to regain their energy and give us momentum." The ensuing kick-off was fumbled by USC's Leroy Jeter and recovered by Tech's Steve Pharr at the USC 37 yard line. The USC defense stiffened inside the 10 yard line, and on fourth-and-goal from the two, Tech settled for a Scott Sisson 20-yard field goal to give Tech a 10-0 lead with 1:24 left in the first half. After receiving the Tech kick-off, USC was forced to punt after gaining only two yards in three plays. Jason McGill fumbled Daren Parker's kick, and Randy Bunch recovered the ball on the Tech 28 yard line. Three plays later, with the clock showing :02, Mackie connected on a zy-yara neia goal to cut the l ech margin to 10-3 at the half. USC received the second half kick-off, stalled after picking up one first down, and was forced to punt. Starting at their own 38, Tech promptly drove 62 yards in nine plays, with Stefen Scotton going in from the two. Sisson's point after gave Tech a 17-3 lead with 7:12 left in the third quarter. Two key plays in Tech's drive were completions of 23 and 29 yards to Rodriguez, die latter advancing the ball to the USC five yard line. I "Their secondary played deep, and I just found the seams and Shawn put it in there," Rodriguez said. "I guess it's just the way their (secondary) coaches have them play, but they do play soft." USC marched 41 yards in seven plays on their next possession to the Tech 29. After an incomplete pass on third-and-eight, Mackie was true from 47 yards out to pull Carolina within 17-6. On Tech's next possession, Erik Anderson intercepted a Jones pass, but the Gamecocks were unable to move the ball offensively and had to punt again. USC's defense held Tech, but the ensuing punt was fumbled by Carl Piatt and Tech took over at the USC 43 yard line. Two plays later, Tech was in the end zone on a 20 yard touchdown M-un by Jeff Wright. The point after left USC on the short end of a 24-6 score as the third quarter came to a close. Tech added a 42 yard field goal with 7:52 left in the game to close out rw-Jy 0QOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOC lose iwice a ir* By PATRICK VILLEGAS 0 1 fj Staff Writer x 11 /0^/^ Let's flip through USC's new Q C' [trf? 4Athletic Dictionary for this week. x UPSET ? The Gamecock's offensive woes were well represented in their nextto-last possession of the game when they were forced to punt when faced with fourth-and-37, courtesy of a Marco Coleman sack. Coleman, who broke up two passes and made eight tackles to go with his sack, called Fuller tough. "He had to be (tough) to be able to take some of those hits and get up and still do a pretty good job. He's a good quarterback." Fuller, intercepted only once before Saturday's game, was picked off tnree times by lech. Two of the interceptions were made by AllAmerican safety Ken Swilling. Fuller's troubles, however, were not merely a product of poor passing. "Tech's big linemen knocking him down had a lot to do with it," Woods said. "He wasn't as on target as he has been in the past, but we weren't as open as we have been in the past. And we dropped a lot of passes." "I have a lot of confidence in Bobby. If we give him a chance to throw the ball, he can do the job." About his own performance, Fuller said, "it was not a good afternoon for me, or anyone else on the team for that matter. I was really positive that we would be able to get something going in the second half. We just never executed on offense and seemed to get all the bad breaks. We'll be back, though."
