USC stud By MARIA QUINONES Staff Writer If you were driving through the Orangeburg County Fairgrounds this past weekend, it may have looked like the residents were trapped in a 1930s time warp. Peagusus Productions, a film company out of Los Angeles, was filming the motion picture Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, which is scheduled for release in April. British actress Gabriella Anwar, sixteen Candles star Micheal Shoefling and Cliff Robinson star in the movie, which is based on a true story. The heat and humidity didn't keep more than 500 extras from Spartanburg, Columbia, Orangeburg and Georgia away from the filming on Friday. Tona Hill, extra casting director, said that about 10 USC students were involved in the making of the movie. Hill said more students weren't involved because of the filming schedule. "Working on a day that conflicted with classes, not getting ( paid, made the turn-out lower," Hill said. But she added that the students working with the movie were doing a good job. Stuck Together With God's Glue Virgin Records, Ltd. I try hard not to review albums that people are not going to be able to find, but I have to make an exception in this case. This album has been out for more than three months, but I just found a copy of it last week, despite searching all summer in practically every record store on the East Coast. I could give you a clue as to where you might find it in Columbia, but that would be free advertising, wouldn't it? You may remember reading my review of Something Happens!'s last album, been here seen that done that, from this past spring. For those of you who weren't here or just weren't paying attention, I called them "one of the most talented new rock bands to emerge on the music scene in the past year." They are a four piece from Ireland, and one of the hottest acts to ever hit Dublin. They beat both U2 and the Hothouse Flowers as the best local band in a Dublin poll last year. I All four members of the band VI are masters at their crafts, but this b album shows growth both in their a abilities as individual musicians is and as a band. Guitar lines go b from riffs that would shame some metal bands to melodies and is bridges that would impress anyone, ta Once again, in spite of the qual- n ity of the musical performances, c< the lyrics are by far the best part of h the album. The band has had si enough experience now that the v' songs are less about making it in the music business and the games o that men and women play, and ti more about love and society. a "Skyrockets" is a beautiful song t( about unrequited love. It contains a lines such as "My love is waiting/I o fired skyrockets for you/You C didn't see them/Now what am I to ? do/They light up the sky," which g float over a beautifully bare little p guitar bit. g A lot of the songs are about Ii missing someone or feeling lonely while on tour. "The Patience Business" has one of the best lines of n the album with "I phoned the f< speaking clock to hear a voice v. speak/It said 'at the tone you will fv be'/Very much alone." 0 There is also a great tongue-in- w cheek social observation in "Brand o: New God." The song is a witty c< criticism of orthodox religion, us- tf ing lines such as "They say he left c< us all a note/Called 'crucial life in- c< struction'/All of it illeeible/Except ft the word 'Destruction.'" When I reviewed Something [appens! last album, I said that le key word in talking about them 'as potential. They were then, and re still, a young band. Truthfully, was hoping that Stuck Together 'ith God's Glue would prove to e the realization of that potential, true masterpiece, but all in all it ; really no better than their last alum, nor is it any worse. The difference between the two the obvious maturation that has iken place. The music is a little lore free-wheeling. They are beaming better musicians. But they ave lost a bit of the innocent implicity that added so much alue to their first effort. The album is a disappointment nly in that respect. I can only cricize them so sharply because they re really too good not to get betix with every album. Compared to lot of the albums that have come ut this year, Stuck Together With lod's Glue is a wonderful success, lopefully we can look forward to reat things from Something Hapens! with their next album. These uys are destined to be superstars, t's just a matter of time. P.S.- I changed my mind about ot telling you where I finally )und this album. The record store 'as Record Town in Columbia fall.
