use back < on straight By RICH TAYLOR Staff Writer When USC signed Omaha, Neb. native Rob DeBoer to a baseball scholarship this year spring, Coach June Raines knew he had corraled a good hitting catcher. DeBoer hit .612 as a high school senior. Fortunately, DeBoer has proven I*- -** A - ?? * 1 * "? * A /I /I -a 4-2! a mm 4 m 4-1% A iu uc a quamy auuiuuii iu uic Gamecock football team as well. Though not yet a threat to the throne occupied by fellow twosport star Bo Jackson, DeBoer's performance against North Carolina Saturday night is a definite move in the right direction. Replacing an injured Mike Dingle in the second half, DeBoer ran for 63 yards on 10 carries, including a one yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. DeBoer chose USC over Nebraska and other schools because of the opportunity to play both football and baseball. "I was so close to going to Nebraska on a baseball scholarship, but I decided at the last moment to take a trip down here (USC) to see what I thought," DeBoer said. "I fell in love with the place. Obviously, things have turned out real well. "I'm real happy here. Football is Love Continued from like the old saying, you do what's best for the team." Berson added that in USC's appearence in the 1988 Final Four, Love was moved to right back on defense against Howard University. "He played a tremendous game," Berson said of the performance. Off the field, Love is a USC Honors College student and was on the Dean's List for the spring 1990 semester. On the field, Berson says, Love also displays his intelligence. "The thing that makes Jeff so valuable is that he combines skill and a good mind for the game," Berson said. "Jeff has good organization ability and fine technical ability," Berson said. "He can think his way through. Love also enjoys the opportunity to use his creativity. "The more forward my position is on the field, the better I am," Love said. "I like the creativity of setting up goals. On defense, you are destroying others' creativity." Love has scored 16 goals in his "IT'S ii ;:?Sx-::? :s?H >-V;:.:*--V-' Bp nr~i wow Ops] UP Seriou 'r capitalizes ahead style keeping me busy. Everybody is so friendly here and the team is real close/' he said. DeBoer compensates for a lack of great speed by running over the opposition, rather than around them. "I'm not the fastest guy in the world," he said. "I'm kind of short, and I don't have those quick feet. The way I do it is just run straight ahead." USC head coach Sparky Woods praised his team for an overall offensive improvement from the season opener partly because of some "hard nosed running by a young man named Rob DeBoer." Although DeBoer said he enjoys playing football more than baseball, he realizes that baseball presents a more realistic career opportunity. "I was drafted in the 10th round by the New York Mets in high school," DeBoer said. "The money wasn't right and most teams realized that I wanted to go to college and play two sports. But I'm probably better in baseball than football, and my ultimate goal is to be a professional baseball player." But for now, DeBoer is content playing football and is using his straight ahead style. page 8 rarftpr and has had Q assists In their opening game this season, Love assisted the winning goal in USC's 1-0 win over George Mason. He scored on a penalty kick in a later game against Appalachian State. But, being one of only six seniors on the team, Love provides more than just on the field output. "Jeff, as a part of this senior class, provides leadership," Berson said. "Jeff gives us good leadership in that he's very serious on the field. "The thing he provides is that he figures out how to win the game. That is an excellent ability. Jeff's leadership is like the rest of the senior class ? he leads by example." On a possible national championship in his last season, Love likes USC's chances but isn't making any promises. "It takes a lot of talent, and we have that," Love said. "And it takes a certain amount of luck. We don't have any excuses. We have all the tools. "I'm not making anv guarantees. but I am keeping my fingers crossed."
