Success not! Gamecock j By DOUG AUBE Sports Editor She has put together a very im pressive win-loss record over th< years and was an all-star performe in college. She has been recog nized as the South Region Coacl of the Year twice in the last thro seasons. She is Joyce Compton, USC head softball coach, and she know success. Compton's teams have compilec a 384-150 record in a span of fif teen seasons. She played softball at Trentor State College where she was ar all-star first baseman. The National Softball Coaches Association named Compton the South Region Coach of the year ir 1987 and again in 1989. Despite her personal accomplishments, Compton credits those around her for the success. "Having a lot of talented players over the years has helped turn the program into a success," Comptor said. She even refuses to take credit for the recruiting of that talent "The players have done a good jot of talking up the program and peei recruiting, and this has had as much of an affect on our success as anything, she said. NE hing new for >oftball coach The Robbinsville, N.J. native - graduated from Trenton State in 1972 with a B.S. degree and went 5 on to become the head softball r coach at Piscataway High School and then later served as an assists tant coach at Trenton State. e From 1973 to 1975, Compton played for the Raybestos Brakettes, an amateur level team. With Coms pton manning first base, the Brakettes won three consecutive j national championships and the team captured the international championship in 1974. Compton joined the professional ranks in 1976, playing three seasons for the Connecticut Falcons earning all-star honors. "As an athlete, I have always been in competitive situations," she said. "Being around the best has had a carry-over effect for me. Compton's first collegiate head coaching job came in 1975. She compiled a 93-19 record at Mattatuck Community College over a seven year span and has yet to suffer a losing campaign after 15 seasons as a head coach. After putting together a record of 115-77 at Missouri, USC came ? calling and Compton answered. In her first season at the Gamecock helm, Compton led her team r to a 34-14 record, earning her first coach of the year honor. Four seasons have passed since r her initial USC campaign. Com- p pton has since compiled a 176-54 ^ record and has seen her team make ^ it to the top of college softball ^ with a trip to the Women's Soft- r ball World Series in 1989. s That season also saw Compton p earn her second coach of the year , honor. ^ And Compton is still looking el- ^ sewhere to credit her triumphs. ^ "As far as awards go, so much p is dictated by the accomplishments r of the team.
