By DAVID BOWDEN Assistant Carolina Life Editor The Freshman: Disappointing comedy starring Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando. The movie drags, but the ending is the biggest let-down. It seems like the screenwriters wrote themselves into a corner. But it should still be seen for the Komodo dragon episode. C+ Ghost: An awesomely entertaining and romantic picture. Patrick Swayze gets his career, out of the gutter with this one. Their debut album, Vivid, was a , platinum selling introduction that | took the music industry by storm. ] Time's Up is a most eclectic al- } bum. The band blends together , metal, funk, rock, soul, jazz and rap to form the musical basis for the songs. Lyrics, as usual, are strong and socially conscious, more so even than those on Vivid. The album's first song, the title track, is a ferocious speed metal/ funk rocker. Its lyrics imply imminent apocalypse if some things in our world are not saved. Time's Up is packed with antiracist messages, as could be expected from such a socially responsive band. The second track'of the album, "History Lesson," is a ma Fi\ ~ \ -t- ^ Vilia CELEBR C \. Nothing can be taken seriously in this film. There are many in-jokes for movie buffs, but this is pretty light entertainment. C Mo' Better Blues: This is an uneven picture, like all of Spike Lee's other works to date. However, like all of Lee's pictures, this movie has great dialogue and interesting characters. There are some terrific jazz numbers too. If only the ending hadn't been so . . . nice. B+ Quick Change: Bill Murray is his irrenressible best in this Dolour's :tic masi musical montage of sampled speeches and sermons with an antiracist message set to a soulful background by Vernon Reid. "Pride," written by drummer William Calhoun, responds to those who question why a black band plays hard rock music: "Don't ask me why I play the music/It's my culture, so naturally I use it./I state my claim to say, it's here for all to play." "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" is one of three songs on Time's Up about love and relationships. It is a funk/soul ditty about a surprise romance. "Under Cover of Darkness," written by lead singer Corey Glover, is a treatise on love and physical relationships in this day of sexual uncertainty. The third, "Solace of You," is a toe-tapping, soulful piece with a beat reminiscent of Vivid's "Glamour Boys." The song talks of one man's undying love, and is laced with skillfully placed South Afri can cnanis ana anu-Aparineia messages in Corey Glover's lyrics. The band's messages run the gamut of all social issues from racism to drugs, street violence to the environment. "New Jack Theme" and "Someone Like You" are two vehemently anti-drug songs. The James Brown-type groove of "Elvis is Dead" complements humorous lyrics like "When the king died/He was all alone./I heard that when he died/He was sitting on his throne." However, underlying this humor sits a message abc^Pon i vmpa a j ' m'i Mi TMliiiB] qe Flavor, City ! Murray and pals pull off the perfect bank robbery but can't escape New York. A simple plot, but well written and acted all around. A Robocop II: Another sequel to a classic action movie. This movie drags at times but is saved by an awesome ending in which Robocop guns it out with his replacement. There is also hilarious and sophisticated satire of evil big business. Not the best action movie of the summer, but not bad. B Taking Care of Business: This is not high comedy, but I found ictiesi terpiece l out role models and how the public falsely idolizes famous people. "Type" and "Information Overi load" are two closely linked songs. Both look shamefully on the state of the world. "Type" looks at the conditions of our inner cities, while "Information Overload" expresses a paranoid fear of encroaching technology. The final song of Time's Up, "This is the Life," expresses a need to stop dreaming and get on with life. It brings to mind the problems addressed in previous songs, in order to re-emphasize their importance. Living Colour proved with Vivid they could play different styles of music. With Time's Up, they have proven they can play many different styles of music extremely well, and keep their own distinctive sound in the process. With guest artists Mick Jagger, Little Richard, Queen Latifah and Doug E. Fresh, Living Colour fused parts of the rock, soul, funk, jazz and rap worlds together into their own uncompromiscd sound. i Time's Up is proof that Living Colour's success with Vivid was not a fluke. It is a masterpiece of eclecticism. Time's Up has a sound that hopefully will be heard throughout the nineties as the band records future albums. This album shows Living Colour's time is not up, but is just beginning. A is [ Flair ' : '"; ~ ?EE MUSIC Chris Richards er8 ips!
