"It's a very tough week, and everyone gets tired," Rush Director and nursing senior Lisa Daniels said. 'The rushees as well as the sororities have been trying to make good impressions. This disappointment can be painful, according to Dr. Philip Michels, a psychiatrist at Richland Memorial Hospital. "Don't feel like you're not a good person. It might just be your hair or your grades that determined their decision," he says. "Recognize that you can't be everything to everybody. If you're human, you're going to make some waves with somebody." The sororities will reiew the women's ranking and reeal their selection of pledges xiay. "So much goes into rush decions ? grades, activities or somemes a rushee's family has been in sorority," Daniels said. "I think 11 the sororities look for a well>unded woman." It costs $25 to rush if women reister before July 30 and $45 after lat date. "They don't have to buy ew dresses. It's up to them. We miind the freshmen that the sorory women haven't seen the dresses iey wear to church," Daniels said. Daniels said she has been teased with how smoothly Rush feek has gone this year and that le tries to keep the positive attiide that every student at USC can nd a place in the greek system. Some women prefer to be involved with their college organizations like the Student Nurses Association or campus involvement like Carolina Cares," she said. While she says she thought rush was one of the better ways to meet people and get involved, she also hopes to meet people through classes. "I'm just not the kind who can just walk up to somebody and make immediate friends. I'm from out of town and don't have a car. It's easier when you're doing something in common," she said. Daniels, who originally didn't think the greek organizations were for her, said belonging to one of USC's 14 National Panhellenic Council sororities has been a great way to establish bonds and work . with a group. Gamecock While Michels says he realizes sororities are not sadistic organiza-. tions out to hurt people's feelings, he offers advice to women who are feeling the symptoms of rejection. ?, "After a rejection, one tends to be pessimistic, less likely to take risks, more irritable. You feel more stress and anxiety," he said. "They might tend to blame the sorority 'v and develop this big backlash of hate at the organization that turned them down. They might desperately try to gain acceptance in ' the next rush. "Anytime one gets rejected, it ' hurts. If a group rejects a person, it hurts worse than an individual rejecting someone," he said, adding that women should realize that the sororities' decisions were made , mainly from superficial things and from as much as they could pick up in a short period of time and not from really knowing you.
