Offe^gt CBS give another c< By The Associated Press NEW YORK ? Reality is a bad idea for television entertainment. It looks awful, the acting's terrible and the writing is dreadful. That goes double for "realitybased programming." "Top Cops," a stylish, sometimes riveting crime drama tonight on CBS, transcends the "reality" TV genre with the true stories of real police officers at peak moments in their careers. It has advantages over reality: "Top Cops" is shot on film, which immediately gives it a better look and feel than "reality" cop shows, which have a cheesy, shoton-video look with the distorted perspectives and bobbing camera of amateur video. "Top Cops" uses actors to recreate the stories, rather than "reality" police, whose mawkish righteousness is more stilted and contrived than anything a screenwriter could devise. To their credit, most police agencies are sensibly modest about their work. Entertainment is not their mission. "Reality" police, however, routinely risk losing a conviction or harming the innocent by taking along a camera crew. "Reality" police never seem to tackle nests of Central American cocaine lords bunkered up with submachine guns. They bust poor people, stupid people, petty crooks and genetic losers with bad teeth and awful taste in furniture. "Top Cops" is good because it doesn't try to be a documentary. The actual police introduce their stories and provide intermittent narration. The story is left to the professional actors and technicians who reconstruct it. Instead of artifice like, " Officer Jones confronted the gunman," the voice-over says, "I was ready to rock V roll wit' dis guy." You see an actor who's fer-sure READY to rock 'n' roll wit' dat guy. Officer Paul Ragonese tells us about bomb technicians lured into a building by an incendiary bomb explosion only to find 15 sticks of dynamite rigged to go off in a mat ter of minutes. Ragonese must disarm the bomb. Ragonese's calm voiceover over tells us what his trainers taught him: "If you ever walk up on a package and you see it's a live device, do what you have to do right there. Never turn your back on an explosive device." Words to live by. So's another throwaway line: "On the bomb squad you only get one 'Oops.'" The second tale is Secret Service Agent Ron Malfi's nervewracking attempt to get the goods on dope-crazed Westies gang leaders Mickey Featherstone and Jimmy Coonan before they destroy him. The third story is Officer John, Snidersich's telling of his deadly; showdown with a crazed bank rob-; ber. It's a powerful piece of "action" that brcomes emotionally in-, volving as Snidersich, near tears, describes his wounding. The officers involved in each in-; cident were used as technical advisers on location. At the program's close, a narrator gives a "Dragnet"-style closing, describing, the outcome of the cases and the lives of the participants. Very talented Canadian actors bring these stories to life. William' Colgate's portrayal of Snidersich is; quite affecting. So are Jeremy Kaicniora as me aepravea L-oonaijand John Tench as the derangetj ' bank robber James Bell. Director Gil Shilton, a veteran; of such TV actioners as "The Ai; Team," "V" and "Blue Thunder," gives the show a relentless paceand skilled action sequences. Ron!
