Play it again, S\ Gamecock By FRED GONZALEZ Sports editor In Sparky Woods' second season as head coach of the Gamecocks, this season may be better than his inagural one. Despite the loss of quarterback Todd Ellis and runningback Harold Green, the Gamecocks return several players in key skill positions. Filling Green's shoes will be senior tailback Mike Dingle. The allstar runner from Moncks Corner rushed for 502 yards last season and scored six touchdowns. He also caught the ball 11 times for 99 yards last season as most of the offense will be on his shoulders as well as junior wide receiver Robert Brooks. Last season Brooks caught 34 passes for 471 yards and four touchdowns, including two against West Virginia. Brooks also excelled as a kickoff returner, amassing 564 yards on 24 kickoffs. The question still remains as to who will throw the ball to Brooks and the other receiving corps. Filling Todd Ellis' shoes will be no easy task, but the job of doing so has been placed on three able candidates: Dickie DeMasi, Bobby Fuller and Wright Mitchell. DeMasi is the only quarterback candidate with game experience, filling in at the position for the final four games of last season after Ellis went down in the North Carolina State game. Fuller is a transfer from Appalachian State, Woods' former ball club, while Mitchell improved his status during the spring practice after having missed his first two seasons with back injuries. Defensively, the Gamecocks will be shifting to the 4-3 alignment, and Woods has said the Gamecocks will be making the commitment to improve defensively. Anchoring what could be a ferocious defensive line are seniors Kurt Wilson, Corey Miller and Trent Simpson along with junior GET The < use First I Wedne > P-2E Fir Wednesday, Russ All / oarky s could be -Mhk?^9F wl^^k: Off to the races (JSC star runningback Mike C carry the offense as well as the b; Marty Dye. Miller's best game last season was against Georgia when he had 11 total tackles, one fumble recovery, two sacks, two pressures and one tackle for a loss. Patrick Hinton will anchor a depth-weakened linebacking corps. Last season he led the team in tackles with 108. He also had 64 solo stops. The secondary will again be inexperienced.
