Could Gam excel in Su Who ever said college football is king sure wasn't kidding. As the 1990 season approaches, several conferences are trying to restructure and realign themselves to present a more formidable and lucrative television package. In other words, the days of the independents are dead. Unless you are Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish signed a con , tract with NBC to televise all their home games, which includes their annual showdown with Miami (Fla.). Now with just a few networks remaining for college football telecasts, conferences are trying to lure the big bucks with big packages. For example, the Southeastern Conference is trying to add six teams to come up with a two sided eight-team group. The new teams would include Arkansas, Texas, and Texas A&M from the Southwestern Conference, Florida State, Miami, and little old USC. Yes, the Gamecocks. The Pac-10 would like to add Colorado, BYU, Utah and San Diego State and become the Pac-14 "while the Big 10 has already added Penn State. And then there is the Metro Conference, which has never had football, but could be the big winner out of this rat race. They have proposed a Super Metro with 16 teams. The new additions would be Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Temple, West Virginia, Rutgers, Miami and East Carolina. Now the catch is some of these teams could go back to their basketball conference, such as Syracuse, while others could stay. So, in essence, this is a made for TV football conference that could very well work. With the 16 teams, four or five could easily make a bowl game and reap even more money that would be distributed to all the schools. The proposal would divide the 16 teams into a North-South grouping of eight teams each. Each of those eight teams will be divided into groups of four. For example, USC could be in a grouping with Miami, Virginia Tech and East Carolina. They would play those three teams along with the other group of four: Florida State, Southern Miss, Tulane and Memphis State. After two years, the Gamecocks would then play another group of four teams along with their original three opponents. It's a good plan in which two champions, one from the North and one from the South, would be crowned and perhaps face each other in a championship game. And with only seven conference opponents each year, four other non-conference games could be scheduled. So in the example of USC, the Gamecocks could still play UNC, Duke, Clemson and N.C. State. USC's schedule would start off with two home dates against Duke and UNC, which they would win easily. Their third game would be at conference foe Virginia Tech, which USG would squeak by. After a second conference road win at Tulane, Sparky's troops would come back home for a key matchup against Miami (Fla.). USC would take a slim four point lead into the fourth quarter, but a Hurricane comeback would spoil it for the Gamecocks. With a record of 4-1, USC would go back on the road to Memphis State, a lopsided win, and N.C. State, a come from behind win and a 6-1 record, 3-1 in Super Metro play. \ Back home the Gamecocks would tangle with East Carolina. | The Pirates, who weren't considered a threat, take an early lead j and look to spoil championship dreams for Carolina. But a fourth quarter comeback led by Robert Brooks and quarterback Ben Ho- 5 gan save the day. USC then heads 1 out for the road in the biggest ( match of the year against Florida 5 State. 1 The Gamecocks haven't won at J Doak Campbell Stadium in a long I time, but this Saturday it would be 1 different. In a defensive struggle, 1 only placekicker Marty Simpson's 1 field goal shows on the scoreboard as USC leads 3-0 heading into the fouth. FSU coach Bobby Bowden then fools the state of South Carolina again with a punt rooskie that results with seven points and the lead. But late in the fourth, USC defensive back Thomas Cross picks off a Seminole pass and races 63 yards before lateraling to fellow defensive back Erik Anderson for the final tweleve yards and the touchdown. USC wins 10-7. USC, tied only with Miami for the Super Metro South division lead, finishes their final two games at home in grand style. They blow away Southern Miss and take care of in-state rival Clemson. The Gamecocks finish 10-1, 6-1 in the Super Metro, and win the South division crown after learning that Miami lost to Florida State in their last game of the season. Now it's off to the Orange Bowl, which is the site of the Super Metro championship game. South Carolina takes on the North division champs, Syracuse, in front of a nation wide audience.
