Horror mo gore and n Horror movies have long been a favorite with the movie-going public. People like to be scared. Unfortunately, I don't think the public has been getting its money's worth recently. Some of my favorite horror movies are also the goriest, such as George Romero's Living Dead series. But many times, film-makers lose sight of the purpose of the horror film.*" Instead of scaring an audience, they make movies that are nothing more than a showcase for specialeffects. Two prime examples are the Poltergeist sequels. While the first movie was a heart-stopping classic, the sequels degenerated into "haw many different ways can this family get screwed up?" The son's braces grow out and try to kill him. The father brings new meaning to eating the worm in a Tequila bottle when the worm turns into a bie monster that the father pukes out in a most unattractive way. These are nifty things to watch, but they aren't really scary. For me, I just sit there and wonder how the effects guys did that. Many movie-goers probably enjoy graphic scenes of violence, but they would probably like some substance too. Perhaps "substance" isn't the word. Roving bands of flesh-eating zombies aren't exactly an element of fine cinema. Yet movies that truly make the audience terrified have more depth than the run-ofthe-mill slasher flick. The fellowship is awarded annually to eligible graduates planning to teach at the college level. Dickson, with a current 3.9 GPA, plans to graduate in May with both a philosophy and Baccalaureus degree.
