We were standing in line at a concession stand between the sixth and seventh holes at the MCI Heritage Classic when we heard a mar. /\ Dig ruai. We had been following the twosome of Greg Norman and Billy Mayfair for six holes when we decided to take a brief pit stop before the 179-yard par three seventh at Hilton Head's Harbour Town Golf Links. V We figured we'd stop here, then 4ump over to the eighth hole and grab a good place to see the action. At the time, the plan seemed ingenious. Until we heard the roar. What we heard was no par roar. Pars only generate applause. This was no birdie roar, either. Birdie roars weren't this loud. We looked at each other and shook our heads. It didn't happen. It couldn't have happenened. It did. Hole-in-one. Greg Norynan. And we missed it. All because I wanted a damn :oke. Evidently we weren't the only )nes upset at missing the shot. They joke with the crowd between shots and are easily accessible in the clubhouse after the day's round. The whole island atmosphere seems to cater to the easygoingness of the golfers. Rumor had it that last year, after finding out he had not made the cut, Fuzzy Zoeller went out and got trashed at a local bar. It's likely he wouldn't have done that in Augusta. Kirchner replaces Jim "D Counsilman who announced his tirement earlier this year a guiding IU's swimming prog the last 33 years. Counsilman ' six NCAA championships as 1 coach of the Hoosiers. Kirchner, 31, is a 1982 grad of the University of Texas, served as an assistant coach tJ from 1981 until he was nai head coach at USC in 1985. During Kirchner's four-) stint at Texas, the Longhorns four consecutive Southwest C ference championships and ished among the nation's top t ' teams each year. In Kirchner's five years as 1 coach at USC, the Gamecocks the Metro Conference champ ship each year. USC had fini of 22nd, 10th, 11th, 16th and in the NCAA championships.
