Unforlately, the myopic Academy nmittee once again proves it has guts whatsoever, and less ins. \s Kim Basinger pointed out in most awkward moment of the ole show, Spike Lee was >nged. His Do the Right Thing s ignored in the Best Picture sgory. Steven Soderbergh's sex, and videotape was as well, member of the cast of sex, lies, i videotape was nominated ter. ^.nd of course, Crimes and Misneanors was also neglected, alugh at least Woody Allen got a nination for Best Director. I e complained about how these ;e films got shafted by the idemy before, but the final w had to be in the award for the t Original Screenplay. 'he Oscars threw a bone to ;e films, nominating them for category. But did any of those ] e win? Of course not. Instead | insipid, predictable, and ridi- ^ >usly phony movie Dead Poets' iptv wnn -v I he Academy went for the safe, ] nless movie instead of having r courage to recognize avant- { le cinema. Similarly avoided r the highly controversial but cally acclaimed movie Drug- \ e Cowboy. Movies on drug ad- a ts don't go over well in I ywood. j part from the major awards, A r movies got left out in the 1 in other categories. I know tl 3le don't sweat out the an- l ncement of who won Best ti nd Editing, but the best in A i fields deserve recognition. 3r example, it did not hit me c I the actual telecast Monday h it that Danny Elfman did not a nominated for the original mo- ii score of Batman. Batman was ii ilarly overlooked in Costumes, tl ;e-up and Special Effects. a atman wasn't the best movie v m m Ut: BIKE W FREE REGIS March 28 IN FRONT OF THE R wise! mse! The only award Batman did win was for Best Set Design, which is only just considering the awesome job done to make Gotham City come to life. And I guess I'm dreaming to wish that Public Enemy's fantastic song "Fight the Power" (from Do the Right Thing) was nominated in the Best Song category. The Academy doesn't have the cajones to pick a song that urges the assertion of black rights over such drivel as "The Girl I Used To Be" and "Kiss the Girl." Maybe the worst thing in the whole telecast was the atrocious number showing all the costumes that were nominated for best :ostume. This sickening production number featured disco dancers "dressed ike Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy from Driving Miss Daisy loing some Las Veeas lounee act rhe choreographer should be shot. Believe it or not, I was pleased vith some awards. I was shocked ind pleased to see Daniel Day?ewis win for My Left Foot. And essica Tandy winning for Driving 4iss Daisy is a nice tribute to her ong distinguished career. Given he competition, it is fitting that driving Miss Daisy won Best PicLire (it was too much to hope that 'ly Left Foot would win). The Oscars are rarely fair. The eremony was decent and wellosted by Billy Crystal, but if the wards stink, so what? I am thinkig now more than ever that judgig the allegedly five best in anyting is too subjective to be worth dam. The opinion of lots of moie people is just that. )C I iTRATION & 29 USSELL HOUSE
