Holderman _ tightens bonds with board By The Associated Press A new, two-dimensional relationship has sprung up between president James Holderman and USC's Board of Trustees under the chairmanship of Michael Mungo. Past leaders of the board have been mostly reticent in criticizing anything Holderman proferred. Not so with Mungo. The chairman last week questioned whether the university should be so heavily involved in the Ira and Nancy Koger Center for the Performing Arts. The comments raised eyebrows because Holderman has proudly cited the year-old center's contribution to culture in the Midlands. Holderman was nonplussed by the comments, though he did defend the $300,000 USC losses on the center. "The chairman has the u:? " llglll ISJ Hid UWI1 III1I1U. The two seem to have developed a sort of restrained respect for one another. Mungo said he also noticed that relations were a little strained when he was elected in October* 1988. "It took a little getting accustomed to. "I don't know if it's necessary to be absolutely totally comfortable," he said. "Each person respects the other." Holderman declined to comment about the difference between Mungo and other chairmen, but he acknowledged that Mungo "has his own view of things." The two do, however, share the same desire for the university to succeed, Holderman said. "That's what's important." In addition to breaking tradition with his public criticism of university projects, Mungo has also tried to push the board toward a more aggressive oversight of the university. That would include requiring university-related foundations to open their books to the public, and creating a fiscal policy committee to oversee university spending, including Holderman's own discretionary fund. Mungo for the most part has won praise for his efforts. Fred Sheheen, head of the state Commission on Higher Education and a critic of some university actions, praises Mungo. "I think he has made an effort to reinvigorate the board's involvement with the university," he said. Board members also openly argue with each other at meetings about issues. Sheheen and others say this is also a break with the board's past and its reputation for passivity. "At one time we had total unanimity," Mungo said. "Now we have real arguments, real debate. "I think that's healthy," he said. ^ \ \ ^ Jy * Lk \ JB (Sk w fl I GIVE BLOOD, PLEASE ^i RedCroM l ME REPORT 9 USC po- Suspicious person, ant states an unident her, acting very suspic fice.eom- March 22 that had a Disorderly conduct, f it.
