Sports 8 ? 1 he Gamecock Wednesday, March 7, 1990 use shod avenges ea By JEFF NICHOLS Sports Editor Any coach worth their chalkboard knows it ? basketball is a lot like life. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way. For ACC regular-season champion Clemson, learning couldn't get much harder than a 54-53 shocking defeat at the hands of the USC riamppnrVc MnnHov nirrht of TTronL ui ivvv/viv j ITXVI1UUJ lllglli Ul X x anxv McGuire Arena. After the loss, Tigers head coach Cliff Ellis said he hoped his team learned something about handling their new role atop the ACC. "In two games, I don't think we've handled our success very well," Ellis said. "I don't think we learned anything from losing to Georgia Tech. I've been concerned about that. I was told about that Wednesday night (following Clemson's win over Duke to clinch a share of the ACC title). I'm learning about it, too. "But I don't want to take anything away from South Carolina," Ellis said. He would be hard-pressed to do that. For a USC team that's had so much taken away already, a win over the regular-season ACC champs is a hard one to tarnish. "This is a great win for us," USC head coach George Felton said. "We've had some tough losses lately, and to come back and beat a team like Clemson, it's just a great compliment to our team . . . I m just real happy. When you think about our season and what this group of young men has gone through, I can't ask for a better ending. Well, I can, maybe next Saturday." A win Saturday would give Felton and USC their first Metro Conference tournament championship. But it probably wouldn't make most of the 10,863 fans in attendance any more excited than they were after Monday's win. Few wanted to leave. Or maybe they couldn't believe it was over. After Jo Jo English hit what proved to be the game-winner with 1:00 remaining, David Young had a chance to give Clemson the lead with :33 left, but he missed a 3-pointer. USC got the rebound, but promptly turned the ball back over 1 tA PlAmcAn THa TirrArc ran thp LW VlWllOUU. 111V 1 IgV/lJ 1UU UIV clock down to : 14 remaining before calling a timeout. j After senior Elden Campbell missed a short jumper from the left baseline and Dale Davis missed a tip-in try, USC freshman Chris Leso came down with the rebound and went to the floor as the clock ran out. ISykes shin final seasc By DOUG AUBE Staff Writer As the end of a college athlete's career nears, ine apprenension inai the athlete feels toward that final contest can be one of disappointment or pleasure. Add to that apprehension the drama of playing the team's archrival in the last home game of the athlete's career. Mix in some spine-tingling, nailbiting action that doesn't subside until the home team, led by an underdog player who is playing his last home game, pulls off an improbable last-second upset victory. Sounds like a script made in I Hollywood. USC's lone senior, forward Eric Sykes, played the role to perfection in Monday night's USC ba^ sketball victory over Clemson. Sykes stared the apprehension \ square in the face and came away Pg quite pleased. jg "I loved it and wouldn't have it any other way," Sykes said about his final game at Frank McGuire Arena.
