Carolina Life 4 The Gamecock Monday, March 5, 1990 ??^? Old-style almost non War movies are one of the oldest movie genres, but they are truly a dying breed. Hollywood used to crank out those three-hour extravaganzas with John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Ford, Lee Marvin and the rest. Now, these movies are almost I ?: ? * tl. 11 * .. n i nuii-cxisiciu. i rit riuni jor i\tu October is the first one of its kind in a long time. Why are the bigbudget, star-studded war movies so rare? One reason classic war movies have declined is that movie-goers after Vietnam have come to the conclusion that wars are actually pretty bad. Those war movies that did succeed in the '80s were a new breed where a one-man army goes to a foreign locale and kills lots of bad guys personally. Real war movies were replaced by the goofy egogratification movies of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. At the other end of the scale are the realistic war movies that can't even be called war movies without detracting from them. The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now back in 1979 effectively started this genre. These movies show war in all of its futility and horror. Those and more recent movies like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Born on the Fourth of July turn the war movie genre on its end. The movies in the middle ground have disappeared. Besides the fact that war has lost its luster, we have run out of enemies. World War II was great because the justness of the Allied cause was unquestionable. Well, World War II is a little long in the tooth now. John Wayne is dead, and another big war is more unlikely than ever. What are Hollywood war-mongers to do? The makers of The Hunt for Red October had a good idea: use a story written by Tom Clancy set in the pre-Gorbachev era (with the Cold War going strong). How long can the Soviets be used as the bad guys? We haven't really gone to war with them, anyway. Long ago, producer/director/ screenwriter James Cameron had a great idea for a war movie. He made a large budget, large cast movie with lots of gore and violence. It was an excellent revival of some classic war movie ideas without glorifying the brutality and senselessness of conflict. The heroes were outnumbered by a vastly superior force, but triumphed in the end. The bad guys weren't Nazis or Commies, however. They had acid for blood and three-inch teeth. It's a lot like the old days of Hollywood war movies, when one could see all the big stars battling it out with the Nazis and the Japanese. While the movie is oldfashioned, it is not unentertaining. It is certainly one of the better action thrillers of the year so far. Director John McTiernan (who also did the excellent Die Hard) is really proving to be a major talent. McTiernan uses all kinds of weird camera angles and close-ups to show the claustrophobia and intensity of submarine warfare. He knows how to make an audience sweat out a torpedo attack right along with the crew of the October. The October's commander is played by Sean Connery, who has made a few films over the years. He makes his Captain Ramius seem like a real person (that just happens to have made a decision that could start World War III). Alec Baldwin (Talk Radio, Beetlejuice) plays CIA agent Jack Ryan, who believes that Ramius is trying to defect.
