Bette Midler followed the trend,

Billy Joel, after opening the
show with "We Didn't Start the
Fire," lost the Pop Vocal-Male
category to Michael Bolton. The
Fine Young Cannibals, after performing
"She Drives Me Crazy,"
lost album of the year to Raitt.
Fine Young Cannibals had a disappointing
evening, also losing Pop
Performance Group or Duo to
Rondstadt and Neville and Record
of the Year to Midler.

she was awarded the 1990 Campus
Artist of the Year and the 1990
Jazz Artist of the Year. "I'm
simply ecstatic. I'll probably never
forget that, along with touring with
the Charlotte Symphony and opening
for Ray Charles."
All of these awards and recognitions
may seem like the easy life,
but Powell has warnings for those
who believe that it is.
"If you're not willing to dedicate
your life to it, don't do it,"
she said. "It's not as glamorous as
it appears. It's more hard times
than good times. In anything you
do, you have to be very dedicated
