Hunt scored a game-hic SPORTS BRIEFS The Cromers lead USC to home win The USC baseball team won their home opener Saturday with a * 13-5 win over Campbell University at Sarge Frye Field. Both Cromer brothers, D.T. and Burke, smacked three-run homers en route to driving in seven runs in the win. D.T., a freshman right fielder, hit his home run in the second inning and had singles in the first and sixth innings. Burke, a sophomore shortstop, hit his homer in the fifth inning. He also had singles in the fourth and seventh to drive in another run. The Gamecocks are now 1-1 after dropping their season opener to Jacksonville last Thursday. USC's next game will be Tuesday against Baptist in Charleston. Softball team splits with Lady Paladins The USC Lady Gamecock softball team opened their 1990 season Saturday by splitting a double ^header with the Lady Paladins of Furman in Greenville, SC. In the first game, USC scored 2 runs in the 7th inning to defeat Furman, 4-3. Junior Tricia Popowski had three hits for USC in the game while junior Angie Lear was the winning pitcher. The Lady Paladins avenged the loss in the opener by defeating USC in the second contest, 1-0. Furman held USC to only 3 hits in the game. USC, 1-1, travels to Charleston for a doubleheader with Baptist on Saturday. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and boxing promoter Don King are scheduled to appear at a fundraising banquet at Morris College Feb. 24. Tyson reaffirmed his commitment with the predominantly black school despite losing the heavyweight boxing title to James "Buster" Douglas, school spokeswoman Rose Hudson said Thursday. "The fight has no bearing on his appearance. The invitation was extended because they are role models and because of their accomplishments," she said.
