Haring, who was active in AID fund-raising, returned Jan. 18 fror a trip to Europe and soon fell i with cold and flu-like symptom: Slabbert said. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the guys who brought you that Snow White musical last year, really proved that they are a bunch of sniveling cowards. Example one: Do the Right Thing was an almost unanimous pick as one of the best movies of the year by critics across the country. However, the Academy did not think so. The only reason I can think of is that this movie is Controversial (with a capital C). The Academy can't take films that question the world as we know it It is really big of Oliver Stone to take a stand against the Vietnam War in Born on the Fourth of July. Who doesn't think that war was a bad idea? Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing showed how normal, everyday people can erupt into hate and violence. And not in a foreign war, but right down the block. Spike Lee had the gumption to show the ugly truth that racism is still pervasive in society. It makes Born on the Fourth seem dated. Do the Right Thing should definitely have been nominated. And it wasn't even my favorite movie of the year. Woody Allen's Crimes j i/:-j i uriu Mizuerricunur j was uic ucsi movie of the year by far for its brilliant treatment of nothing less than the meaning of life. Allen concludes that God is dead and that you can get away with anything if you don't let your conscience get in the way. Heavy stuff, way too heavy for the guys who said the fluffy tear-jerker Field of Dreams was one of the best movies of 1989. It is good that Woody Allen is nominated as Best Director for. Crimes. But it shows another stupidity. It seems strange that he can be one of the five best directors when his film wasn't one of the best The Academy refuses to nominate the best movies. Last year, a movie with an interesting view of the life of Jesus got no credit (1988's Last Temptation of Christ). This year movies on racism and morality didn't make the cut. Another weird one: The star of Crimes was Martin Landau. His role was critical to the theme and -f a\ * _ TT- * *1 piui ui uie movie, ne was in ine movie more than any other person. He was nominated for an Oscar all right ? for Best Supporting Actor! Another nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category was Dan Aykroyd for Driving Miss Daisy. I wish someone had told me that he was a good actor. He imitates people; he doesn't act. A cheesy Southern accent does not an actor make. In the always eagerly anticipated Best Documentary category, there was yet another travesty (well, as much of a travesty as a movie nomination can be). Michael Moore's Roger and Me was a sharp-edged look at the closJ ing of General Motors plants in Flint, Michigan. Moore gave an unpleasant look at American soci-! ety today. Too bad he was too Controversial. We can't have that. What did the Academy do right? Driving Miss Daisy for Best Picture, Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise for Best Actors, Jessica Tandy for Best Actress, and Danny Aiello for Best Supporting Actor were all well-deserving nominees. It is a shame that good nominations are the exception and not the rule.
