Staff Writer
The recent rash of sunny skies and warm temperatures
are not only a sure sign of spring, but also a sign
of spring sports.
TTie USC spring sports season was officially kicked
off Monday afternoon with a media luncheon at
Williams-Brice Stadium.
The annual luncheon is held to introduce the media
to the head coaches of all non-revenue spring sports
teams.

coaches said they are anticipating successfull seasons.
The men's tennis team, under the direction of 1989
NCAA Coach- of-the-Year Kent DeMars, was ranked
No. 5 in the country at pre-season.

Hopper, a transfer from Tulsa, will bolster an already
strong lineup.
The team is currently 1-0 and will face Duke this
weekend in a key regional matchup. USC is ranked
No. 1 in the region, and Duke is No. 2.
The women's tennis team entered the season ranked
25th.
Head Coach Arlo Elkins will lead a young team
that has only one senior, Carolina Culik.
Joining Culik will be the sophomore trio of Nathalie
Rodriquez, Michelle Duda and Robin Deitch.
The Lady Gamecocks will face 11 of the top 25
ranked teams this season and are currently 4-0.
Another nationally ranked women's team is the
Softball squad led by coach Joyce Compton.
The Lady Gamecocks are ranked 13th and will
open their season Feb. 17 at Furman.
