USC Briefs Author to give 'Easter Weekend' reading Poet and novelist David Bottoms will give a free public reading from his new novel, Easter Weekend., at 8 p.m. Monday in Gambrell Hall Auditorium. A reception, also open to the public, will follow in the third-floor foyer of Gambrell Hall. Easter Weekend is scheduled for publication this month by Houghton-Mifflin. His first book, Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump, was chosen by Robert Penn Warren as winner of the 1979 Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets. Bottoms wa$ honored in 1988 with an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ingram Merrill Foundation. He is co-editor of the Morrow Anthology of Younger American Poets. Singer to help celebrate Black History Month Singer Jane Powell, whose list of credits includes national tours and a movie role, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb.28 in the Russell House Ballroom. A native of Roanoke, Va., Powell has been compared to such singing greats as Patti LaBelle, Pearl Bailey and Aretha Franklin. Backed by her five-piece band, she has opened concerts for Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton and has toured with the Platters. In 1985, she was a featured singer in the movie "Marie," which starred Cissy Spacek. The National Associastion for Campus Activities has nominated her for the 1990 Performing Artist of the Year in music, Jazz Entertainer of the Year, Campus Entertainer of the Year and Contemporary Music Artist of the Year. Powell's performance is co-sponsored by the Carolina Program Union and USC's Association of Afro-American students. Program to introduce black students to USC Black high school students from across the state are invited to spend a day during Black History Month learning about minority student opportunities at USC. Carolina Tip-Off, a special day-long program, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 17 at USC. The registration fee is $5 for students and $8 for adults. The fee includes lunch. Carolina Tip-Off began in 1988 as a means of encouraging outstanding black students to stay in South Carolina for their college education, according to Ron Laffitte, assistant director of admissions at USC. "Carolina Tip-Off introduces minority students to USC programs and activities designed to help them on campus. They learn about the admissions process, financial aid and scholarships, student organizations and other activities such as student organizations and other activities such as student leadership opportunities," he said. A separate session will take place for parents interested in student life at USC. Parents will be able to discuss concerns and expectations as their children become college students.
