January 26, 1990 The Gamecock ^? ??iL USC tunc By WENDY BOGGS Staff Writer You can't turn the dial on your TV to channel zero, but if you look down on Evans Street, the run down but quaint little neighborhood below the water tower past USC's Bates area, sometime during the day the sounds of Channel Zero can be heard echoing across the train tracks. Channel Zero is a local band comprised of singer and guitarist Frank Robinson, bassist Jeff Able and drummer Scott Frey. Al though their name is not as recognizable as some of the other bands around Columbia's growing music scene, they are slowly gaining more popularity. A young band, they have done almost 20 shows since August, which they call their official beginning. Channel Zero is not a cover band. Besides Jimmy Hendrix's "Hey Joe," and maybe a few other covers (it has been rumored that they do a reggae version of "Stairway to Heaven"), their hour long set is original music written by all three band members. When asked to classify what kind of music they play, no member of Channel Zero could really come up with an answer. Their music is hard but meaningful and slightly melodic. Scott is a big fan of heavy metal, but Frank will quickly tell you that they're "not Metallica." Frank cites many different musical influences like the Police, Husker Du, jazz and rap, while Jeff likes Fetchin' Bones, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Hoodoo Gurus and the Grateful Dead. If you pursue Channel Zero ab out identifying their music, odd terms like "boot-knockin" and "head-janglin" are thrown around. "Our music makes your head jangle (not bang) when you listen to it," said Frank. The "bootknockin"' description is possibly more of a inside joke than a serious-description of their music.. Although they have no burning message to send (not yet anyway), Frank said in a WUSC interview that they say a lot more than "I lost my keys in the back seat and you lost more than that." The best way to find out what kind of music they play is to listen to it. They can currently be heard on WUSC 90.5 FM, and there is a three-song demo tape available at Manifest Records and Tapes. Although you can easily buy Channel Zero's cassette at Manifest, it may not be so easy to hear them play at the popular clubs in Columbia. Many bands say it is difficult for new, non-cover bands to book shows in Columbia. Even when they do get shows, they usually don't know until the night before or even the day of the show. "That makes it difficult for us to promote ourselves with posters and things," Frank said. They recently did a show at Club Dog Alley in Charleston to a full house of about four hundred. This was one of the only shows that brought them any revenue: a whopping $75. Scott said, "We're not in this for the money, obviously." Channel Zero plays more for exposure rather than profit at the moment and besides not being paid, they don't even get free beer when they play. "Sometimes we get happy hour prices, said bcott. According to Jeff, "any money we make goes directly back into the band." Channel Zero did a successful benefit show a week ago for a disabled children's camp where Frank used to work, and he is hoping to do another one in the Restaur: "Only in I Great Me: y Serving Lat? Channel Zero's best opportunities for playing shows around Columbia are in opening up for other local, more recognizable bands. "People like to hear what they know," said Frank, "and our music is different to them." From the crowd response at their benefil show, it is obvious that Channel Zero's music is catching on. "We just like to have a good time wher we play and we enjoying meeting all the different people who go tc our shows," said Scott. "We reall) appreciate any interest in ou band," said Frank.
