Snoopy g< in France' By the Associated Press PARIS ? Cartoonist Charles Schulz drew lofty praise from the keepers of French culture yesterday as they lavishly celebrated the 40th birthday of America's favorite floppy-eared dog, the irrepressible Snoopy. The beagle was glorified with a giant retrospective at the Decorative Arts Museum. French Culture Minister Jack Lang named Schulz a "commander of arts and letters," one of France's highest awards for excellence in me ans. "Thank you for being the creator of Snoopy, full of humor and with a zest for life," Lang told Schulz. "Your character is both mythical and hedonistic, and he has taken over our collective consciousness and become a part of our everyday lives." Schulz, 67, beaming but appearing slightly embarrassed by all the fuss, said when Snoopy was a World War I flying ace, he asked him how he learned to speak French. "He considers himself a simple cartoonist, not a great artist worthy of a show at the Louvre. He just couldn't believe it," she said. The Decorative Arts Museum is in the northern wing of the Louvre palace, but it is not actually part of the main museum. The show opens to the public Wednesday and runs through April 22. Driving Miss Daisy, a play about the development of an unlikely friendship between an elderly white woman and an aged black man, will make its debut in South Carolina at a sold-out performance at the Koger Center Thursday night, Jan. 25. The Pulitzer-Prize-winning play, written by Alfred Uhry, was in spirea Dy unry s own mmuy notebook. His Southern Jewish grandmother, Lena Fox, was 72 years old when she smashed her car and her family hired a black chauffeur. Driving Miss Daisy's plot revolves around the 25-year relationship between the chauffeur and Miss Fox. These are the two leading characters in the play that will touch the audience with their hard times and comical situations the two experience as their friendship grows. Even though the play takes place in the '50s and '60s, it still carries a weighty message for the '90s. The Koger production features Rosmary Prinze as Miss Daisy and Ted Lange as the chauffeur. The audience may recognize Prinze from "As the World Turns" and Lange from "The Love Boat". Directing the production is long-time actor Charles Nelson Reilly. Asked about Reilly, who is probably best remembered from iv s Matcn uame, Fearson said, "Reilly is actually a very prolific and successful stage director. He does an excellent job." Since the play has been scheduled since the fall, Pearson doesn't feel that the release of the film has had much to do with the Koger sellout. "I think it was word of mouth from the original play," Pearson said. "We were sold out before the Golden Globe nominees were announced, so there seems to be a real hunger for live straight theater in Columbia." Driving Miss Daisy, the movie, is currently playing in cinemas around the country.
