'Internal loses pur By DAVID BOWDEN Staff Writer Internal Affairs is a well crafte< thriller with plenty of sex and vio lence for the whole family. The plot centers around a dedi cated cop in the L.A.P.D. Interna Affairs Department (Andy Garcia who gets in conflict with the mos lAmupi uup ui an uuie, piayeu u; Richard Gere. This sets up a classic good vs evil confrontation, with Garcia an* Gere being good and evil respec tively. Recently, many movie have tried to compare the personal ity of the hero with that of the vil lain (most notably Batman). Inter nal Affairs does better than most. The two main characters an compared constantly. They ar both shown to be hot-headed jerk who regularly beat up people, ex cept that Garcia's character is oi the side of the law. Each is showi at home with their families. The; even have the same hair-cut. With all this literary duality-of man stuff, this movie could hav< been really bad. It is not. It is ven entertaining most of the wa] through. This is partly due to th< good direction by Michael Figgi: (he also made the underrate* Stormy Monday) and the very goo< performance by Richard Gere. Gere is ereat because he plays ; villain who isn't crazy; he is jus plain evil. He isn't complete!; heartless, though. He does a toi of bad things, but he actually look like he regrets some of it. Thei again, he strangles his partner s< that he won't talk to the interna affairs guys. Garcia stares and glares a lot, but he begins to look silly after a while. His character is slightly on edge. For example, he i thinks his wife is having an affair, though he has virtually no s evidence. His wife is played by Nancy Travis, who wins the "Andie McDowell Look-Alike Contest." She has a thankless role as the target of revenge for the bad guys. 2 It is a shame that the wives of die e heroes in action movies are almost s always endangered in some way. The movie burns out threen quarters of the way through, en11 ding very unsatisfactorily. This is y very disappointing because the big dramatic clash, which builds the whole movie between Garcia and Gere, ends rather strangely. " Internal Affairs is not a standard action movie. Rarely is sex used as a weapon in a non-pornographic g movie. As a matter of fact, sex ac} tually beats out violence as the j main (potentially) offensive feature of the movie. a One nit-picking criticism is that t Nancy Travis is forced to wear y preposterously short skirts at work 1 that make her look silly, especially s since her character is a museum 1 curator.
