Viewpoint Monday, November 20,1989 THE GAMECOCK 3 Firing Conway teacher shouldn't be fired for supporting boycott The Horry County School Board fired H. H. Singleton this weekend for publically supporting protesting football players at Conway High School. Singleton was suspended in August for holding a press conference in support of black football players who were boycotting the team because a less experienced white nliiv^r r*?r?1 i ?1 * * a uiacfw piayer ai quaneroacK. Singleton has been teaching in Horry County for 20 years and is the president of the local chapter of the NAACP. The board said in its decision that the deciding factor in the firing was a teacher's responsibility to resolve a problem before exploiting it. The board also said the disruption at the school where Singleton taught was enough reason that he had to be dismissed. That is not enough reason. With this decision, the Horry County School Board is saying one of two things, both of them bad. The board is saying either teachers don't have a right to speak their minds or black teachers should keep their place in racial matters. Either one is enough reason to fire the board. They are deliberately and consciously denying the right of free speech to Singleton. He has filed suit against the board, and if there is any justice, he will win a huge settlement. But the message coming from thp county is clear enough ? if you work for us, you don't have a mind. No longer is the issue black or white because of the football players. Now the issue is decency and equality. Would a white teacher be allowed to lead a march for, say, Pro-Choice in Horry county? It would be interesting to see. This is not over for Horry County. The board has laid the groundwork for major racial unrest. Singleton should be reinstated, apologized to and probably given a raise for having the guts to stand up for what he feels is right. Obviously, the board has a different view of what America stands for. FA<T CfOPWA on ' ' ? viMTniNr il o E tl , , p The Gamecock ?
