Turner mc By CHRIS SILVESTRI Sports Editor The USC football team has moved senior Pat Turner from defense to quarterback. This change follows Todd Ellis' season-ending knee injury, which occurred in this past Saturday's game against N.C. State. At practice Monday, DeMasi and Turner took the majority of the snaps at quarterback, with freshman Ben Hogan also taking a few. In 1986, after being redshirted the previous year, Turner began a battle with Ellis for the starting quarterback job, but fell out ol contention when he pulled his hamstring. He also broke his collarbone in the spring game. As a reserve quarterback in 1986, Turner was 10 of 14 for 152 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed 11 times for 59 yards. Turner transferred to Georgia Tech in 1987. but returned te USC, losing a year of eligibility. In 1988, Turner was switched tc defense, and he has been playing as a linebacker and a safety this season. The move back to quarterback could mean that Turner, should he not see any game action at quarterback, may not play another down for the Gamecocks. "Pat has been through a lot of adversity here at USC." Mitchell said. "And I'm sure he'll handle it all right. I talked to him about it, and he said he wants to do what's best for the team." Mitchell said the basis for the decision to move Turner to quarterback was the Gamecocks realistically need to win two of their last three games to receive a bowl bid. With that in mind, and not wanting to have to play a freshman (Hogan) against a team like Florida State, the coaches want to have Turner in a position where he would be able to start if he had to. "What we'll do is take probably a little bit of one game plan out, and make that his game plan so that he can just specialize in one little oackage of a game nlan " said quarterback coach Don Kirpatrick at a press conference Monday. Mitchell also noted that DeMasi is still the No. 1 quarterback. "Dickie has a great grasp of the game," he said. "I think he'll do all right." 1 is rare m Give Uj&fl Am .EASE! sc Ke? USC to scrimmage again Wednesday The white squad defeated the garnet, 63-61, in the first intrasquad scrimmage for the USC basketball team held Saturday at the Carolina Coliseum. Junior guard Barry Manning, the captain of this year's squad, hit a three-point shot with 43 seconds in the contest to pull the white squad within five. He hit another threepointer with 24 seconds to pull within two. Manning then stole a pass and hit a jumper with one second left to tie the game at 61. After a fall on the ensuing inbounds pass, Manning hit two free throws to give the white the comeback victory. Manning finished the contest with 19 points. Joe Rhett led the garnet squad with 21 points. Senior Eric Sykes scored 16 points, shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Runners fare well in intrasquad race The inaugural Jeff Small Invitational was held at the WeemsBaskin Track Friday night with Mike Hedgecock and Dana Purser leading the way for the men and women of the USC cross country team. The invitational was a time trial for the Gamecocks as the men ran two miles, and the women ran one mile. Hedgecock covered the two mile distance in 9:12. He was followed by Paul Laymon who finished in 9:31. Purser Finished with a 5:04 followed by Danielle Adams, who had a 5:06. The Gamecocks will participate in the Metro Conference Champ ionships Nov. 4, in Blacksburg, Va. Pep Talk Continued from page 8 His longest run was 31 yards. Not bad, but he has been playing defense for the past two years at two positions ? free safety and linebacker. Ben Hog^n has had limited playing time as Ellis' "We're winning, let's stick in the youngsier 'cause it won't hurt" backup this season, hitting three of eight passes for 47 yards. He led a scoring drive late in the game against Western Carolina. Then there's Lance Harp, Wright Mitchell, Bru Pender, Joey Brett, John Wunder, Danny Willis. Freshmen all. None of them have stats like Ellis' ? 24 victories, 9,519 yards (if you add in his bowl stats, he has 9,953 yards), 49 touchdowns and the infamous 73 interceptions. The NCAA doesn't recognize bowl stats, but the USC record book does. Those are records. .. . And now he is gone. He'll be missed. rff5 A M LJLiJI >ard 1989 n Teaching trds 50 ' lip ; University of South Carolina tcellence in Teaching Awards, recognize those teachers who :cel to their full potential and for their students' academic ts have all demonstrated the nspire their students. ipients Timothy Koch Finance Jean Ann Linney Psychology Steven V.
