Brisson, Tufino new marks for < By BRANT LONG Assistant Sports Editor < Clark Brisson has finally done it. j At The Graveyard Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over , Davidson, Brisson scored his 19th goal, eclipsing the < record of 18 set by Brian Winstead in 1978. Brisson was happy with the goal, but is more inter- j ested in getting the lead back in the South Region, , which is now held by Wake Forest. j "We have one more game against Jacksonville, and hopefully we can win that game, then go into the Met i Life Classic and get two wins," Brisson said. "Hopefully, we'll get back to the top spot in the region." t Another record set by Winstead was lost to fresh- } man Ruben Tufino, who recorded his 13th assist, one t higher than Winstead's 12 in 1978. ( Despite the record-setting day of Brisson and Tu- ( fino, the game against the Wildcats wasn't easy. USC head coach Mark Berson compared it to a visit to the dentist's office. 1 "It was sort of like pulling teeth the whole way * through," Berson said. "All the time you're there it hurts, but in the end you're happy. You go out of s there, and you don't have to come back for another 1 year. That was kind of like the way the game was." For the past three years, they have had to adjust to a new cross i country coach. Not just one coach, i or even two, but three different coaches. "This year we had no idea who the coach was going to be until two days before we came to school," said Purser, also a junior. "That's hard. You don't know what you're coming back into. . . but it's really not as hard 1 as it sounds." * This season, Greg Kraft, the track coach, and Jeff Small, the 1 cross country coach, have taken ( over the program. Both Purser and Hedgecock seem to be pleased 1 with the new program. I "I've seen a total 100 degree turnaround from the last two i years," Hedgecock said."There's a lot more discipline on Coach ( Kraft's part. . . I'm happy with , what I've seen so far. They're putting the program in the right direction." "I feel that the attitudes are a lot due to the new coaches," Purser CPniJTC PPTPPC Simian seeded first in tennis tourney The main draw of the South Carolina Invitational tennis tournament begins today at 9 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center and Maxcy Gregg Park. Eleven preliminary matches were played Thursday, and the tournament, which features a representation from about 20 schools including all the ACC schools, lasts until Sunday. Coming up soon are the Metro Championships. Both of these events, are ones the runners look forward to. "This Jeff Small Invitational is really getting us pumped for Metros. . . Purser said of the championships being held in Blacksburg, Va. "I want to place really high in the conference. If I finish in any of the top three positions, I'll be very happy with that." "The Invitational is going to be a lot of fun. . . I feel, in the Metros, we're definitely going to be very competitive," Hedgecock said. "I feel everyone has been coming along really strong the last few weeks, and I think Coach Small's training is really going to come together. I want to do well." Despite the adversity of changing coaches and strategies, Purser and Hedgecock have adapted well and look to repeat this past sea son's strong finishes in the Metro Conference Championships on Nov. 4. The Jeff Small Invitational is tonight and will feature the women at 9 p.m. and the men at 9:20 p.m. when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the Lady Hokies Df Virginia Tech. Swimming squads begin new seasons The USC men's and women's swimming squads open their 1989-90 seasons today when they play host to the Furman Paladins at the Carolina Natatorium in the Sol Blalt P.E. Center at 4 p.m. The men's squad finished this past season with a 6-2 record, while capturing their sixth conse cutive Metro/NIC championship and finishing 16th in the NCAA. The Lady Gamecocks ended this past campaign with a 2-5 record, but managed to claim their second straight Metro/NIC title and placed 12th at the NCAA's.
