Team effort By STEPHEN GUILFOYLE Staff writer Team effort is what USC head football coach Sparky Woods and his players like to now say wins games. And USC had an all-around game against Weitnrn Carolina with manv n1av#?rc malrtno -? J J J?/"" significant contributions to the win. In the second half, USC linebacker Robert Gibson lipped a pass into fellow linebacker Pat Turner's hands, giving him his first career interception. When asked how it felt after the game, Turner said, "It felt good ? it was like the win, a little bit sloppy, but it got the job done." Many Gamecocks have been helping USC get the job done. This season, USC has had 11 interceptions by 11 different players. Defensive linemen Tim High and Corey Miller have gotten many of the sacks this season. While he didn't get any against Western Carolina, Miller has six on the season, and the school record is 10 sacks in a season, set in the '80s by Andrew Provence, now with the Denver Broncos. It was a little history for Gamecock fans ? a sack resulting from a blitz. Of USC's sacks, only two of 13 prior to the Western Carolina game were by non-linemen. One was a sack by strong safety Mike Conway. The other was by linebacker Joe Reaves. USC had an all-around effort from its running backs as well, with 330 yards rushing on the afternoon. Harold Green rushed for 150 yards, going over the century mark for the fourth time this season. Green also scored his fourth touchdown of the year. He needs three more to break former USC runningback George Rogers' mark of 33. Green said he doesn't think much of records, but added that he would be cheating both himself and the fans if he didn't break Rogers' record now that he is so close. And he has enough time, he said, with four more games to do it. lamecocks Gloria and S; mbles title top doubles t C Lady Gamecocks Louie Gloria and Er m competed in the of the USC men's tei Plantation Fall Tour- captured the doubles ti 'er the weekend in Georgia Tech Fall Clas captured the doubles lanta Sunday, lip. The former Stratford star might have a difficult time breaking the record though, because his backup, Mike Dingle, has been the one called upon to score touchdowns on short yardage situations. The Gamecocks go into a power I-formation with Dingle as a deep tailback and two other runningbacks in front of him. Dingle has gotten . the ball each time and has scored eight touchdowns on the season with his patented Air Dingle flip-over-the-line. Dingle scored two touchdowns against the Catamounts. Although he didn't score any touchdowns, USC receiver Skeets Thomas got into Saturday's act, too. Thomas made his first catch of the year, getting 8 yards late in the game. He had been doing some work on special teams. Thomas missed spring practice because he was playing baseball.
