Camper play By TRICIA TITUS Staff Writer Camper Van Beethoven Key Lime Pie Virgin Records Music critics now have proof that they have been blessed: Camper Van Beethoven has finally named one of their albums with less than four words, thus eliminating many hours of typing. Seriously though, Camper's latest album Key Lime Pie shows a ' definite change in their approach ( to their music. The Santa Cruz band has been a 1 favorite on college campuses for f the past four years, but with their 1 last album, Our Beloved Revolu- ( tionary Sweetheart, they gained their first widespread acclaim and 1 major financial success. Prior to Sweetheart, Camper had ( been known primarily as a "hip- 1 pie" band, associated with a quirky ? combination of folk and punk that 1 produced the cult hit "Take the 1 Skinheads Bowling." * . Camper also used a violin and nandolin on Sweetheart, played by he multi-talented Jonathan Segal, mposing a sort of Gypsy-like flair >n the album. The change in style which is jresent on Key Lime Pie is most ikely a result of the change in Hamper's line-up, because Segal eft the band (along with his manlolin, keyboards, and acoustic guiar) and has been replaced by fenale violinist and singer Morgan -ichtcr. Beware: '( By DAVID BOWDEN Staff Writer The movie Gross Anatomy is the story of several medical school students in their first year. It is the doctor's equivalent to the law school student movie, Paper Chase. Gross Anatomy is better than its name. The title refers to one of the classes taken by the students in which human bodies are dissected. The plot centers around Joe Slovak (played by Matthew Modine). Slovak is a smart, but slobby guy who got into medical school to make money. He is the son of a fisherman, so he is used to blood and entrails. His roommate is a driven, hard' approach Neither one of them may be more talented than the other, but Segal's violin was such a distinguishing feature of the old Camper sound, it may take a while for Fichter to even attempt to take his place. Another difference between Sweetheart and Key Lime Pie is the vast range in the quality of the songs. Some of those on Key Lime Dtii mmti n r "Di nhirao r\f t/-?V* i tc, ouui aa x xv^tui va ui maw/ir stick Men" and "Borderline" are as good, if not better than, those on Sweetheart. But others, like the instrumcntals "Opening Theme" and "Interlude," are just plain boring. Sweetheart, in contrast, was a very solid performance where most of the songs were equal in quality. Here, there are a number of standout songs and a number of songs which you may just want to fastforward through. Key Lime Pie is definitely not another Sweetheart, but it is still well worth buying. "Pictures of Matchstick Men" is positively addictive. Beware of listening to it more than five times in a row because you may eventually wear the oxide off the tape. Dr. Rachel Woodruff (Christine Lahti) acts really mean to Slovak because she wants him to be all he can be. She is the John Houseman of the movie, but she's better looking. The other doctor is Dr. Banumbra, played by Zakes Mokae, who was the witch doctor in Serpent and the Rainbow. The casting agents have a sense of humor. The plot consists basically of scenes of all the students studying really hard and of Slovak getting yelled at by Dr. Woodruff. This is really Matthew Modine's movie. He was great in Full Metal Jacket and Married to the Mob, and once again he proves he can be a likeable character. It has its funny moments, but it is a far cry from Blazing Saddles. Gross Anatomy is now playing at Dutch Square and Columbia Mall theaters. It is rated PG-13 because of some shots of cadavers being cut open. 'Sparky Rock' highlights pep rally Thursday By ELIZABETH LYNCH Staff Writer USC students will be doing the "Sparky Rock" dance at Thursday night's pep rally to support the Gamecocks' game against N.C. State. The rally will be held at Cock's Corner at George Rogers Boulevard and Shop Road. Winners will receive copies of the "Sparky Rock" tape and music j ?i ?:.L ~ ?_i viucu aiuu? wiui a pi^iuic uikcu with the USC mascot, Cocky. Besides Cocky, Coach Sparky Woods will be on hand at the pep rally handing out prizes to all of the winners. Also scheduled to attend the rally is Scott Frazier, the lead singer in the "Sparky Rock" song. The master of ceremonies will be WNOK-FM radio's Jonathan Rush, and the USC cheerleaders and football team are expected to be there. The judges for the dance contest will be Jean Ann Woods (Coach Woods' wife), Joe Pinner of WIS television and John Pritchett and Steve Gill of the syndicated "Sparky Woods' Show."
