Dozier ( By JEFF SHREWSBURY Viewpoint Editor With 2:37 left in the first quarter of this past Saturday's Charlotte Hornets-Washington Bullets NBA exhibition game in Carolina Coliseum, Terry Dozier forged a memory for himself. In this, his first NBA appearence, the lanky 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward caught a chesthigh pass by the left side of the basket, made a move and burnt threetime NBA All-Star and former scoring leader Bernard King. Dozier drew King close to him with a head fake and then scooted by him, holding the ball aloft in his right hand. He then dropped it in the hoop for the layup. iu ji |A/1I1U9 ill Oil uniiuiiu. Forecaster By CHRIS SILVESTRI Sports Editor It was another sub-par week for the predictions column as I was 12-5, dropping my overall record to 47-16 for a .746 percentage. However, it was not as bad as it seems considering the number of upsets that occurred. I mean, who would have thought that the Clemson Tigers would turn out to be such pussycats, or that Houston's high-powered offense would stall and manage only 13 points. "You really don't think about it when you're out there," Dozier said after Saturday's game. "But when I came out (after scoring), I said to myself, 'Hey, I just went by Bernard King.' It gets you kind of pumped." Dozier, a rookie-free agent, is trying to make the Hornets' roster for the season that starts in November. His chances are considered slim as most experts believe Dozier doesn't have the power to be a forward in the NBA. He surely doesn't have the height to be a center, or the skills to be a guard. So, forward is where he'll live or die. In college, Dozier was never known as a power player. His speed and outside shooting abilities were his main threat But in the NBA, a guy with the wiry body of Dozier can't just be a good shooter or quick ? he has to be tough and willing to go inside near the basket where the bigger guys hang out "I know I have to keep driving," Dozier said. "It would be silly to just shoot jumpshots. I have to make the defense respect me inside first. You have to have power in this league to make it." And Dozier's ability to be tough and powerful is the big question j mark in Hornets head coach Dick ] Harter's mind. j For hustle, Harter says Dozier is I an All-Star, but for talent, he says i Dozier is borderline. 'Terry was the only guy giving 1 it his all on both ends of the floor ] tonight," Harter said after the 1 game. But for his first test as a Hornet, Dozier did everything anyone could have asked of him. He played 17 minutes, scoring eight points on four of seven shooting. He grabbed two rebounds and had one steal that lead to a breakaway, two-handed slam dunk in the third /"innrtnf 'I'KA UAmafn vjuiu lvi i iiiv iiuuivu iuoi ui& gdint, 131-123. But aside from the points in front of his old home crowd, it was the quick move that burnt King when Dozier shed his quiet, college playing style and showed that he wanted to play with the big boys in the NBA. His chances of making it are improving, however, as just this ? week, the Hornets traded popular m forward Robert Reid to the Portland Trailblazers for another, less expensive player in Richard An derson. Dozier was competing with Reid for the small forward spot, but will now have Anderson to ? overcome. But Dozier holds no illusions. He knows he's going to have to play the best basketball of his life to have a shot at a spot on the roster.
