One might think 48 yards is a long
way 10 kick a looioau. uniess, 01
course, you're Daren Parker.
The Concord, N.C., junior currently
leads the nation in punting with an average
of 48.23 yards per punt on 22
kicks.
So you'd think Parker would feel a
little pressure every time he steps
onto the field, right? Maybe he's thinking
that opposing defenses are out tc
get him?
Naaahh.
"I don't see it as putting pressure
on me," Parker said Wednesday. "I
don't try to think about it when I'm ou!
there. I'm much more concerned about
that particular punt, and I'm no!
worried about what I've done in the
past. I take them one punt at a time
My last punt, I forget about it after I
punt it, whether it's good or bad."
Parker says that kicking his average
does not concern him as much as jus
getting off a good punt.
"I'm mainly concerned with putting
us in gooa neia position, earner saia.
"I don't worry about the stats. Some ot
the guys on the team, they kid me about
it, but besides that, I don't even
think about it. I don't try to figure out
my average during the game, but
whatever someone tells me afterwards
is the first thing I know about it."
"I don't try to kick a certain average.
I set a goal to kick well, but that
doesn't necessarily mean my
average."
When it comes to punting, Gamecock
head coach Sparky Woods uses
WUSC-FM 90.

"I'm getting to kick plenty," Parker
says of the platoon system. "Over the
last few games I've punted like 14
times while he (Price) has only gotten
three. If anything, Rodney's not getting
to kick enough."
Parker does not think the Gamecocks
will come out flat against homecoming
opponent East Carolina.
"I don't think there's going to be a
letdown," Parker said. "The coaches

the game, and stressing that it's one

want to play their best in front of the
home crowd. Last year, they (East
Carolina) played a real good game
against us, and we didn't look as well
as we possibly could have. I think we
really want to redeem ourselves for
not playing that well last year. We all
know they have a real good team, so
I think we'll be prepared."
