With 52 seconds left in Saturday night's game between the Gamecocks and the Hokies, Mackie's 33-vard field eoal evened the game at 17-17. once again denying the Hokies a victory. Last year, Mackie's field goal late in the game gave the Gamecocks a 26-24 victory at Blacksburg. This year, both teams will have to setde for a tie. With under a minute left in the game, though, both squads had a chance to win. Virginia Tech, was forced to punt after three unsuccessful downs. With 12 ticks on the clock, and the ball on their own 38 yard line, the Gamecocks victory party was cancelled by the Hokie defense, who sacked Todd Ellis twice to end the game. Sparky Woods commented on the tie, "Virginia Tech played an excellent football game. They were very physical. They took it to us." A crowd of 71,824 at Williams-Brice Stadium witnessed a see-saw start to the game with neither team being able to move the football. An Ellis to Robert Brooks 15-yard completion with under eight minutes left in the period was the first first down of the game. The play set up Harold Green, who scampered 44 yards on the next play to give the Gamecocks a 7-0 advantage. The USC defense wasted no time on the Hokies next possession as outside linebacker Mike Conway intercepted Virginia Tech quarterback Will Furrer's pass at the USC 49-yard line. Ellis drove the offense down field and, at the 1:47 mark of the first quarter, hit Brooks for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Mackie's point-after attempt was good and the Gamecocks held a solid 14-0 lead. Then, the Hokies took over. 1 easy\ i )nth Unlimited $45 || 121 DEI Approx. 3 miles on Right )tt Cherry Park ?7T~ 1 use ***\ f W*Va ^ I SUNGLASSES er B lusch & lomb andevei Reg. 69.20 If you' $5495 ^ Look 1 Reg. 64.00 Sept $5095 Reg. 64.00 $50" III THINGS, INC. The Hokie defense forced a Rodney Price punt, and the Furrer passing display continued. Completing 4 of 8 on the drive, the Hokies marched 81 yards again and called on Jeffries for a 1-yard touchdown plunge. "Virginia Tech took the momentum away in the second quarter," said Woods, "They played a lot harder than we did. I was disappointed in our play in the second quarter." After an Ellis pass was picked off with under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter, Furrer once again led the Hokie offense toward the end zone. The USC defense held tight, and Thomas converted a 26-yard field goal to give Virginia Tech their first lead at 17-14. After exchanging possessions, and a Carl Piatt fumble on a key third down conversion, the Hokies moved down field. On fourth and eight, Virginia Tech went for it, and Furrer completed another pass for a first down. Once again on fourth down, with less than a yard to go for a touchdown, the Gamecock defense held the Hokies and took over on downs. With less than two minutes remaining to play, a series of Ellis passes moved USC to the 16-yard line, but three incompletes, including one to an open Brooks in the end zone forced the Mackie field goal to tie the game. Both teams go to 1-0-1 on the season. The Gamecocks travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to meet the West Virginia Mountaineers Saturday, while Virginia Tech plays host to Clemson.
