Forget recruiting, preseason
drills and any upcoming contests
against rival powerhouses; USC
football coach Sparky Woods said
that this week will be the Gamecocks'
most important seven-day
period of the season.
"This is the time to make adjustments,"
said Woods, whose squad
is coming off a 27-21 Victory over
Duke this past week and now prepares
for Saturday's game against
Virginia Tech.
"I anticipate us improving a
great deal, now that we've got that
first game out of the way," the
first-year coach said. "We had a
lot of communication breakdowns,
but hopefully we should improve
this week and get everything
straightened out.
"We did a lot of things wrong
? we didn't even show up at the
right time for pregame warmup.
But you have to remember, it
wasn't just the first game of the
year, it was our first game (at
USC). Now we're aware of how
things should work, and that
should make us feel more comfort
able for our next game."
The Gamecocks take on an experienced
Hokie squad with its
mind on revenge after last year's
contest in Blacksburg, Va. Trailing
24-10 at halftime, the Gamecocks

Game 2: Virginia Tech (7 p.m.
Saturday at Williams-Brice
Stadium).
Records: USC and Virginia
Tech are both 1-0.
Last week: USC defeated Duke,
27-21; Virginia Tech defeated
AJcron, 29-3.
Series history: USC leads 9-7-1
(4-2 at Columbia).
The last meeting: Oct. 8, 1988
(at Blacksburg). USC defeated
the Hokies 26-24, as Collin
Mackie hit three field goals in
the final period to lead the
Gamecocks. Mackie finished the
game with four 3-pointers, tying
the school record. Virginia Tech
led 21-10 at halftime as quarterback
Todd Ellis threw two interceptions,
which were both returned
for touchdowns just before
the half. USC's Robert
Brooks returned the second half
kickoff 98 yards for a touchused
three field goals by Collin
Mackie in the fourth quarter to
come from behind and win, 26-24.
Hokie coach Frank Beamer said
he isn't as interested in the revenge
factor as he is in just posting
a victory ? something his
team has had little success doing
the past two seasons, with a 2-9
record in 1987 and a 3-8 mark this
past year.
"We had the opportunity to beat
them (the Gamecocks), but we let
it slip away," he said.

The Gamecock soccer team improved
its record to 3-0 Tuesday,
as they blanked the Blue Hose of
Presbyterian College in their match
at The Graveyard. The Blue Hose
record fell to 2-1.
USC, ranked second by Soccer
America, outshot Presbyterian

"We did not finish some
chances that were created. I
thought our team was patient,
worked hard, and picked up the
tempo in the second half. I was |
pleased with our performance," .
said USC Head Coach Mark ,
Berson. (
The Gamecocks got on the i
board at 16:04 in the match, after a
direct kick just outside of the <
18-yard box. Freshman Ruben Tufino's
shot deflected off the side i
post, and senior Scott Henderson
was there to push the rebound in.
USC pressed hard for the remainder
of the half, missing several
quality chances. i
In the second half, the Gamecocks
came out blazing. Junior

portunities to increase the lead in
the first five minutes. The first
deader went just over the crossbar,
rhe second one was stopped by
the Blue Hose goalkeeper in a remarkable
save.
Nineteen minutes into the second
half, Patrick Mihm broke up a
Presbyterian pass and distributed it
to Tufino breaking down the right
wing. Tufino sent a sharp pass to
Brisson, who was open in the
middle of the field. Brisson turned
and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper
into the open net. It was
Brisson's third goal of the year.

Henderson. Tufino sent a long
cross to Henderson, who headed
the ball into the upper right hand
comer of the goal. It was Henderson's
second goal of the match and
his fifth career goal.
"Ruben just set me up on both
of them (the goals)," Henderson
said. "On the first goal, he basically
scored it, I was just there to
put it in. On the second one, Ruben
hit a beautiful ball to the far
post, I just knocked it past the
keeper and it went in.
After recording his third assist
of the day, Tufino tied a Gamecock
record for most assists in a
match.
"He's obviously a very talented
player, and we're pleased with
what he is doing," Berson said.
"He is off to a good start"
Tufino downplays his emerging
importance. "We all work together
because we are a team. If we win,
all the team wins," he said.
The Gamecocks will play in the
adidas/Ethel M Tournament in Las
Vegas this weekend. On Friday,
they play UNLV at 6 p.m. and on
Saturday, they play Fresno State at
8 p.m. USC's next home match is
at 2 p.m. next Sunday against the
University of North Carolina.
