Fall sporl By BRANT LONG Assistant Sports Editor The USC track and cross country programs are now under new leadership. Greg Kraft, who spent the past four years as assistant director for track and field at the University of Virginia, has taken over as head coach for the Gamecocks. Kraft will be assisted by his former collegiate track teammate at California Polytechnic School-San Luis Obispo, Jeff Small. Small comes from Florida Tech, where he coached cross conntrv from 1985 until 1988. Kraft's coaching career in track and field has been impressive thus far. He coached Virginia to the ACC outdoor title in 1986 and a sweep of the indoor and outdoor categories in 1987. He has also been an assistant at Kansas State, Indiana State and his alma mater California Polytechnic Insitute-San Luis Obispo. "I'm very happy to be here," Kraft said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. "At Virginia, we graduated 95 percent of our student athletes. We thought we did things from all spectrums of frarlr anH anH ronn try. We hope to do the same thing here at USC." Though he has only been here one week, Kraft is quick to point out the strengths of this year's track and cross country teams. "The women's track team won the Metro Conference title last year and have the key individuals returning this year, including three All-Metro Conference selections," he said., "Also, we have three freshmen that we think can contribute to our program. We expect to duplicate last year's feat again this season and hopefully rise higher in our region at the NCAA Championships. Up front, we have Jonas Gudjonsson and Clark Brisson. We should be strong there again this year. "We are looking forward to this season. I can't remember a year where we worked harder in the preseason. The team is in great physical condition. We're just going to have to lineup, play a few games and see where we stand." With quality leadership already established in volleyball and soccer, and new leadership taking over for track and cross country, the fall should provide some excitement in Gamecock athletics.
