President Marie-Louise Ramsdale said there are many plans in the workings that will help move the university closer to this goal. One of Ramsdale's pet plans, installing emergency call boxes campus-wide, is nearing completion. > She said there are 15 call boxes already installed at different locations on campus. Eight of these become operational today, and the rest will be activated later this week. "Right now, any call box that is not covered up is operational," Ramsdale said. "If it is covered with plastic or paper, it has not yet been activated." She said the boxes are all equipped with a direct-line button that, when pressed, will hook the box up with the university police department's new emergency number, 7-9111. "Even if a person is unable to speak after he presses the button, the police will know exactly where he is and will dispatch officers to the scene immediately," Ramsdale said. Each box will be accompanied by a sign stating that misuse of the equipment is in violation of state statutes and that disciplinary action will be taken. Ramsdale said. She also said that these boxes are very sturdy and, in many cases, can still be operated even if they are damaged. Frank Mims of Operational Services said there will be 22 call boxes in all installed this year, covering the campus at strategic locations. He said the housing office will be placing one box in Thornwell and three others in the Towers during the year. "There has always been 24-hour security on campus, all we're planning to do is enhance the security in the Blossom Street garage," said Danny Baker, assistant vice president for Law Enforcement and Safety. Baker said access to some sections of the garage will be limited to prevent crimes from occurring. "The entrance and exit to the Marion Street side of the garage will be closed. An officer will be assigned to the Sumter Street side of the garage, as well as to the ramp," he said. He said the sixth level pedestrian door will be locked after midnight and on weekends. Criminals do not have to be in vehicles to get into the garage and steal cars. That was one reason for increasing security even at the pedestrian entrances, he said. "We are going to keep an open mind about the increase in security and stay open to modifications." Hanging tags will soon be required on the rear-view mirror of vehicles parked in the garage. Baker said they have not been issued yet, but will be shortly. Decals are already required on the rear bumper of vehicles parked in the garage. Much of the money raised from the increase in parking fees will be used for security, including an increase in manpower, Baker said. He said the law enforcement department is also going to monitor parking safety in other areas of campus such as the Pit and the Pendleton Street garage and devise feasible security systems for these areas. "We don't want to get too spe cific with all of our plans for campus security, because we do not want criminals to be too prepared.
