Art pro! illustrat USC art professor Boyd Saunders grew up riding horses, working mules and tending a farm in rural Mississippi. An artist and seeker, Saunders knew and wandered the land and envisioned of William Faulkner, a celebrated Mississippi writer. One of his favorite Faulkner sto nes, spotted Horses, is a numorous tale about the devious Flem Snopes, who hauls wild mustangs to a small Mississippi town with the goal of selling them to local farmers as plow animals. To think such a scheme would succeed is "about as ludicrous as harnessing a tornado," Saunders said, but it is this attempt that makes Faulkner's story both poignant and hilarious. Saunders, a USC art professor, has brought the characters to life by illustrating a limited edition version of Faulkner's tale. Illustrations for the book, to be released in September, will be displayed at McKissick Museum from CAROLINA ALIV Do you like to as a vocal Carolina Alive, USC's Pop-I many openings for tenor -U I anus diiu supianus. "Much of my art has been built around Faulknerian themes, and the stuff that wasn't looks like it might have been," he said. His themes are "the DeoDle and the land ? they're done from a Southern, rural agrarian point of view." Saunders met Faulkner while a graduate student at the University of Mississippi. "To take this great tale, illustrate it with perceptive, artful pictures, set it in graceful and expressive type on elegantly designed pages and then assemble the whole business under an opulent hand-sewn binding ? to me, that's one of the most complete and satisfying of art forms," Saunders said. * [///////// ease your chances of t job after graduation! He said many of the buildings on campus are easily accessible to handicapped students, but there are still buildings that could be made more accessible. Ail or tne campus buildings should have automatic doors," he said. "There are some places where we (handicapped students) have to sit outside the doors of a building and wait and wait until someone comes to open it for us." However, Rickter said DSS will cause a class to be moved to another building if the scheduled building is inaccessible to any student taking that class. Once classes begin, there are DSS volunteers to take notes and proctor tests for students who cannot write well, and, Rickter said, there is money if any of the students at DSS need tutors. In fact, the only things he said he didn't like about the program were that there are "too many rules, and we have an 11 o'clock (p.m.) curfew. The curfew can't be helped, though, he said. The facility is run by the state, and they've laid down the law ? no curfew, and the place will be shut down. He also said there were some things that he was not told before he arrived to live on campus. "Before I got here, they told me that action could be taken against anyone coming in after the curfew," Rickter said, "but it wasn't until after I got here that they told me what that action would be." He said the disciplinary action taken is that curfew extention privileges are taken away for a set period of time. Rickter laughed, saying his extention privileges had already been suspended for two weeks not too long ago. He said the best thing about being on the USC campus is the women. Marriage is in his future plans, but he sheepishly refused to divulge any details. eiehfe l \ * PHfAlMJJfr t St. 771-7289 Can-Eat!
