The only thing this accomplishes is making people want to krow more, raster. Take for example USC's problems in court with its foundations. The foundations are private fund-holding institutions that deal with all the money USC receives and spends. They were developed so USC wouldn't have to tell the public where the money it gets goes to. Every university basi- . cally has one, but not every university refuses so adamantly to divulge how it works. , This past June, a South Carolina court ruled on a lawsuit that any foundation, however private, if it serves a public university, is subject to the Freedom of Information Act and must ' honor requests for information. Holderman and the other USC big wigs have been trying to fight this for a couple of years now. They tried everything they could to keep the public in the dark about what they are doing with the money. They lost again in court. But they lost even more in the eye of the public. s cutting edge something, but I have problems with "2001." i Take the number ? 2001. Didn't the people t who named the movie know that big numbers i like that should be rounded off? It really should ( be "2000." I'm sure some math teachers somewhere are hanging their heads. 1 The movie itself is problematic. If I had to c ask whether or not "2001" was a movie, then it f couldn't have been made recently. And who i wants their school to be synonymous with the name of an old movie? i We're supposed to be moving toward 1 academic excellence here at USC. By the year 1 2001, USC is supposed to be the Harvard of the r South. And we're moving in that direction. Pretty soon, 2001 is going to be the price of t tuition alone. s But you know, there are some good things that could happen on the way to 2001. By then, the Gamecocks might have won their first bowl t game . . . NAH! c By the year 2001, people might get just as f upset reading about high school and college 1 dropout statistics as they do about drug abuse statistics. And maybe people from this state will realize by then that the confederate flag (con- 1 federate is deliberately lowercased here) is the d symbol of a shameful past best forgotten. c And what about this The USC stuff? If Holderman would have just released the information when it was first asked for, he would have diffused the time bomb that was sure to blow up sooner or later. He still would have had people raising eyebrows at him, but the furor would have died down faster than after he drew out the fight in court ? letting people anticipate and hunger for the information. It was just a misjudgment on Holderman's part He could have saved some face by releasing at the first, but he figured he could win and ft at just caused more embarrassment. It was similar to the Jehan Sadat affair that came out in 1986. If Holderman had just released all that information about her salary and Lhe gifts he gave right at the first, there would have been outrage, but not as mucfi as when he looks like he's hiding things. For someone who is suppDsed to be the cutting edge of administrators in the state, sometimes he doesn't think ahead. And when he loses, USC loses. _ r P oi coniusion hymes. Still, it's pretty stupid.
